The 1991-92 dates for Bill as acting principal in Syracuse probably are right, and '92-93 he was probably still freelancing in Syracuse. I don't know for certain, but Abe might have been acting principal for two years... I just didn't show up on the scene until '92. Coble was associate in NY for a year or two, then decided (I think he made the decision) to return to Syracuse. I used to hear the rumors, but it's been a while since I thought about the upstate orchestras. |

Scott Natzke is the new principal trumpet player in Denver. Russell Campbell played the year before I was there, 2000-2001.
I can't quite remeber the name of the guy who was principal in St Louis before Susan. I do know he went on the play principal in the Bavarian Radio Symphony for many years. It's on the tip of my tongue. I'll ask Susan tomorrow.
By the way, I played principal in Baltimore for seven months of the 2000-2001 season.

Could you be thinking of Chandler Goetting?

MrClean and Josh,
Thank you both for the details related to the Colorado Symphony! I have updated our list with these names and dates. The ITG Journal article for Manny Araujo in the reference section shows that he was principal trumpet through 1990. If the Denver Symphony closed the doors in 1989, did he remain as principal with the Colorado Symphony for one year after the reorganization before he retired?

Josh,
Wilmer has been doing a great job getting us a point where we can ask additional questions for these lists, and finally get answers. Thanks for stepping up and highlighting your time with Baltimore! Looking forward to the Saint Louis information when you get a chance to post it (did Wilmer get it right again?!!)

Joe Umbrico's name came up in a conversation I had with Vince Penzarella.
Joe played principal in the orchestra.

Wilmer,
Looking back at earlier posts, I see that you had already mentioned Joe Umbrico being associated with the Toronto Symphony (his name was very familiar when I saw it again). Thanks for catching this. I have updated the list.

Langston Fitzgerald, the second trumpet player, was on a leave of absence. Fitz decided to take the position of Trumpet Professor at Penn State University, hence the opening.

Gail hasn't played in Baltimore fo a couple of years. Rene Hernandez, who has been playing 2nd for the last couple of years is the de facto 4th trumpet player next year. As is it stands now, they are not filling the 4th trumpet vacancy.
Wilmer is right, Chandler Goetting was the guy in St Louis. |

Hi Derek,
Jacques Lecompte was principal trumpet with orchestre symphonique de Montréal in the sixties under Zubin Mehta. I don't know the exact dates.

Josh and Wilmer,
Thanks for the input for the Saint Louis list. I have added Chandler Goetting just before Susan Slaughter. I haven’t been able to find any good online references for Chandler Goetting to verify exact dates, but I did find that he was included on the Young Concert Artists, Inc. list in 1963. I’m guessing this puts him in Saint Louis in the early to mid 1960s.
I have added a note to the Baltimore list about Rene Hernandez as 4th trumpet for next season. Thanks!

The Kansas City Symphony / Philharmonic keeps coming up in the reading that I have been doing, so I’ve added it to our list. Does anyone have a starting date for Gary Schutza Jr. or know if there was anyone between him and Richard Smith?

I checked a book out from the library called "Herbert von Karajan, A Life in Music" by Richard Osborne to see if there were any good references to trumpet players in the Berlin Philharmonic. There was one reference to Konradin Groth and the Brandenburg 2, but there was one picture that really made the book worth looking through.
The picture shows Herbert von Karajan sitting by his wife (Eliette) on an airplane while on a world tour with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1959. The caption says "Eliette plays the posthorn at 30,000 feet". A model and a trumpet player!
That was an interesting twist in this project that I hadn't expected to uncover. Does anyone know anything about her playing? _________________ Derek Reaban

Henry Nowak was first trumpet in Kansas City, he said, from 1956-62.
I will see Hank on Sunday at the Rhöne in NYC, I will get more information.
