John Taver(Taber) was a principal trumpet player with the Montreal Symphony in the 70s.
Joe Umbrico is a Canadian who was a Curtis student in the 50s, I think he is a pasf principal trumpet player with the Toronto Symphony.

Derek,
The mistake of the spelling of Ben Klatzkin name came about during a conversation with a friend in SF and dung the talk he mentioned that Mr. Klatzkin's name was mis-spelled on a couple of album covers/ programs thru the years so in my scribblings, I wrote both versions in my notes. I had just spoke to Mr. Bush the day previously about Ben Klatzkin and how he had played in the SF Phil before playing in Los Angeles so I was aware of the true spelling and just awaited the chronology. Of course, in my haste to post , I blew it and gave Murphy's law another victim.
I had an idea to further your quest in finding the entire section personal of the orchestra's. All the local musician unions would have contracts and records of the players in the cities that each orchestra had hired on a year to year basis , plus a principal and assoc. principals position has a slightly higher scale most times so it would be easy to somewhat identify what chair the player occupied. I asked Bill Peterson, past president of the Los Angeles local 47 ( and a fine trumpet player in his own right ) about this and he confirmed that those kind of records are kept and it would just to find the right person in the local willing to look for them.
This would not be my first choice in getting the information your looking for , but you could use it over the long haul by just planting the seeds now with the locals , maybe finding a kind soul who would like to help, and wait for info to start trickling in.
Anyway, just a thought.

Here's an incomplete list for Dallas:
1948 - ?? Bernard Adelstein
1953 - 1958 Frank Kaderabek
???? - ???? Ron Modell
1970 - 2002 Richard Gianguilio (sp?)
1989 - 1995 David Bilger co-principal
1996 - 200? Jeff Curnow
200? - 2004 Andrew McCandless
1978 - Present Tom Booth -- Asst. Principal
Around 1992 or so Gianguilio and Bilger traded positions. I know that Tom Stevens was a member of the DSO for one or two seasons in the late 1960s before going to LA, but I don't know what position he held.
I'll fill in the details as I find them.

It’s exciting to see all of the involvement in this project so far! I’m on vacation this week, working on some projects around the house, so this “side project” really fits nicely with my schedule. Just so I don’t miss anything, I thought it would be worthwhile to organize some additional thoughts that I have about this “online” effort.
Once an orchestra’s principal trumpet roster is essentially completed, I think it should be moved to a separate folder within the Orchestral/Chamber Music/Solo folder. The final list would include the current section (found on the Internet) along with a link to the orchestra’s web site. This would then be a great place to submit comments about recordings that are memorable from the different historical sections that have recorded over the years. This could eventually include all of the section players too, and could be added at a later date.
I think that once I finish my postings tonight, I should be able to open separate folders for both the Detroit Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony using this format.
This current folder (what you’re reading right now) will be like a living, working document, gather ideas and information about MANY sections from orchestras across the world. Once a definitive listing has been generated then it would simply be moved to it’s own folder.
Comments or suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks to captain canuck and mcstock for contributing to this effort.
My goal for tonight is to:
- Complete the Detroit Symphony Orchestra section based on input from the ITG Journal and what we currently have in this folder
- Add to the Cleveland Orchestra list that mstrpt started based on input from the ITG Journal and what we currently have in this folder
- Update the New York Philharmonic list based on comments received so far and request anyone with dates to help out (I’ll begin looking in past ITG Journals to see what I can find too)
- Modify the Boston Symphony list based on input from an ITG Journal article
- Move the San Francisco and Detroit Symphony lists to their own folders
- Comment on some of the names for the Canadian Symphonies
Whew! What a list. We’ll see how quickly I can work. _________________ Derek Reaban

Boston Symphony Orchestra
Principal Trumpet Players
Start-End______Name

Current roster for the 2003-2004 Season:
Charles Schlueter – Principal Trumpet
Peter Chapman
Thomas Rolfs – Assistant Principal
Benjamin Wright
From the December 1985 ITG Journal I found the following quote in the article entitled “A Tribute to Georges Mager (1885-1950)”:
Quote: |
After thirty years (1920 to 1950) as first trumpet he was described by Serge Koussevitsky, conductor of the Boston Symphony from 1924 to 1949, as “covering the orchestra with gold”.
|
It also mentioned that he joined the orchestra in 1918 as a viola player and moved to the trumpet section in 1919 and was named to principal trumpet that season.
I have shown Roger Voisin as Principal trumpet from 1950-1966, but he joined the orchestra in 1948.
Comments welcome on this one! I’ll look for more information myself before this is moved to its own folder. _________________ Derek Reaban

Geoff (captain canuck),
In an ITG Article from September 1989 entitled "Trumpet Personnel in Major North American Orchestras: 1989" by John Ossi, I found the following information:
Montreal Symphony Orchestra:
James Thompson, Solo
Robert W. Early, Associate
Jean-Louis Chatel
Jean-Luc Gagnon
Toronto Symphony:
Larry Weeks, Principal
Joseph Umbrico, Principal Emeritus
Barton Woomert, Associate Principal
John Cowell
James Spragg
Obviously, this is just a snapshot of one year, but at least it's a data point, and it confirms Wilmer's information. _________________ Derek Reaban

My original list of things to do was too large to complete in one evening. I'll have to get back to the New York Philharmonic list (reworked based on comments from THers) later (maybe tomorrow night) as well as moving the completed orchestras to their own folders.
How does this format look to everyone?
I think it's a really good start! _________________ Derek Reaban

All the best to everyone, but please note that current 2nd trumpet in the Philadephia Orchestra, Bob Earley is spelled with two 'e's. Minor point, but some will remember the incredible recording of James "Chompson" and "Rob Early" playing Petrouchka with Dutoit's Montreal Symphony...... |

njp,
I love that recording of Petrouchka! I alway's knew about the "Chompson" spelling error but I had no idea that "Early" was also misspelled.
You'll notice that I spelled it correctly in the above post, and I simply transcribed the incorrect spelling from the September 1989 ITG Article earlier in this topic.
Thanks for pointing that out. I found the Klatzkin vs. Matzkin error in my readings on the San Francisco Symphony. I'm certain that it happens quite frequently when putting together these historical lists.

Please note that this is slightly different from the previous lists in that it includes all of the players that have been associated with this orchestra since it’s inception (October 22, 1930).
We needed some international flavor too! Do others have histories for let’s say, Berlin, Vienna, LSO, etc.

In reading the article on Harry Glantz in the February 1996 ITG Journal by Andre M. Smith, he mentions that the information for "this essay has been excerpted from a larger biography in progress, one that also will be a history of the trumpet in New York from 1890 to about 1940. This larger history will be published by Andre M. Smith Music Company in New York."
Does anyone know if this book has been published. I couldn't find anything on line via Google. I would be interested in purchasing the book for the pictures alone!
Any help is appreciated!
