I went to the Gewandhausorchester web-site today to update the trumpet roster on our lists and found that John Roderick MacDonald is no longer listed in the section. I’ve read his bio and seen his interest in conducting career and was wondering if he has stepped down from playing to pursue a new direction in his career. If this is the case, will there be auditions for a new principal trumpet?

Based on input from Steve Anderson, I think this list is mostly complete. If anyone knows who the acting Principal Trumpet in the NMSO was for the 1985-1987 seasons, that would finalize this list. I'll probably open the final folder for this ensemble in the near future, even if I don't have this last piece of information.

I guess I jumped the gun on releasing the “final” list for the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. I thought that I had read the organization began in 1975 (oops!). The first performances were in 1956 and I received some additional details for the list from Brian Evans in the attached message. I will continue to research the players for this group, and hopefully get a complete list of principal players back to the first season.

Thanks for doing that. There's a newer bio at the end of my lecture notes on the ITG Conference page http://www.trumpetguild.org/2005conference/thur/308.html. The notes might interest you too. They will need a little adjustment as they are specific to the conference. (oops - it's on your site too. Nice job. Did you have a look at it?)
You may like to know that Paul Terracini was principal from 1978 (started as associate). When he and I started, in 1975, Lewison Campbell was principal trumpet (roughly 1975-1978 and maybe previous to that too, I am not sure). Prior to Lew, Larry Elam was principal circa 1973-1975. Larry is an American who came out here in the rock band No Sweat, went on to play in the Daly –Wilson Big band and has been Principal Trumpet with the Hamburg Opera for many years since.

I just received a message from Brian Evans (Australia Opera and Ballet Orchestra) and he found details for the Principal Trumpet Players of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (who was the orchestra for Australia Opera up until about 1967 when the new dedicated orchestra was formed). The reference to “Mouthpiece” (in the attached message) is the title of the Australian Trumpet Guild (ATG) periodical.

I’m getting very close to completing this list. I just received a message from Doug Myers, and the middle of this list has now been verified. With the end date for David Washburn that I verified with him, everything falls into place with this message. I have a message in to Glenn Fischthal and when I hear back from him, hopefully I’ll have everything I need to call this list complete.

Glenn Fischthal called me today! We had a nice conversation and he told me that he was originally hired as 2nd trumpet for the HKPO's first season as a professional orchestra. When he arrived, he and the player that was hired as the 1st trumpet quickly realized that their roles should be reversed, and Glenn assumed the role of Principal. He's going to do some additional research for me and see if he can't come up with the name of the player that continued as Principal after he left "the colony".
Very close to having this one completed!

Derek,
As far as I'm aware the principal position is being played by Ryan Anthony and Russ Campbell this year. I believe, although I'm not positive, that Ryan will be playing most of next year as principal. The audition for principal probably won't happen until they have appointed a new Music Director. I have no idea when that might be. Hope this helps.
