I’ve heard back from lots of players on this list and it’s in pretty good shape. I hope to hear back from the Brooklyn Philharmonic soon with leads on the blanks on the list.

I’m excited to finally have a list with Wilmer on Principal and Wynton in the section!

Allen Dean preceded me in Brooklyn. I don't know who Allen followed.
Keep up the great work.

Another name on our list! That’s great. Thanks!

I’ll send Allan a message to see if he can fill in more details.

John,

Thanks for the spelling correction (Stephen Madancy). I have made the update to this list and rolled it into the proper “Historical Sections” folder. I've also updated the New Mexico list.

Derek

Forgive me if you've already updated this, but with reference to the Bergen Trumpet players. I believe the missing gaps, are Nick Betts (now in LPO), after Rod then Tony Cross after Nick.

Hope that helps

I received a message that the World Orchestra for Peace should be considered for our lists. I looked on the web and found details about this ensemble. Between 1995 and 2005 the trumpet section has included:

Mark Calder, Philharmonia Orchestra
Jan Fredrik Christiansen, Oslo Philharmonic
Mark David, Philharmonia Orchestra
Jan Gustavsson, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic
Tomoyuki Hashizume, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra
Adolph Herseth, Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Alistair Mackie, Philharmonia Orchestra
Thomas Stevens, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra
Brian Thompson, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
George Vosburgh, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

Would anyone have details about what years these players were in a section together? It mentions on the web site that there are no principal players, per se, and “their seating positions rotate, and the section leaders vary from work to work”.

I see that they have also released a CD so they clearly should be included here.

Jeff,

Thanks for you message about the orchestras in Korea. I hope your season is going well!

With some difficulty I was able to find the trumpet page on the internet, but I’m not sure who each of the players are (maybe you can fill in those details – see pictures below). There is also some bio information with dates on the web site, but again, it’s not in English so I don’t have a clue what it means.

The key Korean alphabet characters that I used to find the orchestra roster information is what looks like a “7H” at the end of a string of four Korean characters. This seems to guide me to the “artist” page that I was able to get to the map of the different sections of the orchestra (it would be MUCH easier in English).

Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra

Yung Il Lim – Associate Principal

The KBS Symphony Orchestra site is in English and easy to negotiate. It looks very similar to the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra web site (i.e. float your mouse over the “trumpet” section icon, it rises up and guides you to the trumpet page). I’d have your management look at this for a model. Here’s what I have for the KBS Symphony Orchestra

KBS Symphony Orchestra

Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra Trumpet Section

These two pictures probably won’t display because they have Korean characters in the address:

If you can fill in the details, I’ll post them here.

Thanks!

The first picture is Yung Il Lim, our associate principal. The second is Young Hwan Lee. (small spelling change from last time) Last picture is Jee Hwa Lee, who is the former principal. I talked to them today and found out that Jee Hwa started playing principal in 1990, not '84. He was there before then, but wasn't the principal player. In the next few days, I'll try and fill in some of the earlier principals of SPO and some more info on KBS and Daejeon.

I went to the Gewandhausorchester web-site today to update the trumpet roster on our lists and found that John Roderick MacDonald is no longer listed in the section. I’ve read his bio and seen his interest in conducting career and was wondering if he has stepped down from playing to pursue a new direction in his career. If this is the case, will there be auditions for a new principal trumpet?

Hi, I've got the answer to what you're looking for. To my knowledge, Mr. (Dr?) MacDonald did continue his time conducting, and a break from solo work, but only for about a summer, or so.

Mr. MacDonald is now teaching approximately twenty students, including myself, at the State University of New York, College at Fredonia (ie, SUNY Fredonia) as the main (full time) trumpet professor.

I've found him to be an invaluable teacher and tried to get as many lessons in as I can. I had no idea how great of a player he is, as far as his history goes, until I started doing research, and I'm glad that I did. Not only did I find out more/interesting facts about him, but I have had the pleasure on filling you in on this information.

I heard that Giuliano Sommerhalder was offered the solo trumpet chair with Gewaundehaus. I could have been mis-informed. Also they are playing in chicago, or have, sometime in early 2007.

There might be a current roster list available.

good luck.

It's true I haven't gotten around to the historical "deep dive" to gather information about past principal trumpet players in French Orchestras, but I did receive a very helpful message last year with a great start to the current players in many French Orchestras (click here for details). I will certainly get around to the French ensembles in time, but for now I have taken a break from this project. I'll get back to it again one of these days.

Thanks!

I had a request to add a couple of groups recently, and while I have limited information to start with, I wanted to get these listed while I had the time. If anyone can help me with the names of players who were currently in the sections prior to the current principals, I would appreciate it.

I bumped into this online source for data and was able to build most of the list of Principal Trumpet Players for the San Francisco Opera. It appears that the Principal Trumpet in the SFO was also Principal Trumpet in the San Francisco Symphony until the 1979-1980 season. I’m wondering if this would allow me to fill in this list back to 1923.

I thought it was neat to see Joe Alessi (from the MET) in the section as well as Malcolm McNab (for the LA Season) when I was looking through the database!

Anyway, here is the updated list…

San Francisco Opera
Principal Trumpet Players

Start-End________Name

2007-Current_______Adam Luftman
2004-2007_________John Pearson (Acting Principal)
2003-2004_________No Data in SFO Online Database
2001-2003_________Timothy Wilson
1995-2001_________No Data in SFO Online Database
