Jeff,

I saw your message in another post and thought it would be a good time to update the information for the Seoul Philharmonic. Could you check this list for me? I have added Alexander White as Associate Principal. I believe Gareth Flowers was Principal for a time, but it's not clear to me the make-up of the section starting in 2006.

Hi Derek,

I just saw your post and took the liberty to answer on Jeff's behalf (please forgive me, Jeff).

I also listed the nationality of the currently rostered players. I feel it's an interesting fact that we're five players from four different countries (three different continents)!

Principal listed by season
2010/11 Alexandre Baty
2009/10 Alexandre Baty
2008/09 Gareth Flowers

Current roster (2010/11)
Alexandre Baty - Principal (France)
Jeffrey Holbrook - Ass. Principal (USA)
Alexander White - Ass. Principal (USA)
Yeong Il Lim - tutti/section (Korea)
Niels E. Heidoe - tutti/section (Denmark)

I received a letter out of the blue last night that allows us to complete the list for the Seattle Symphony Trumpet Section. Greg Dziekonski, from Seattle, found this TH Post and did a great deal of research to fill in the missing details before 1947. I’m including his letter as I received it, because it contains lots of interesting information.

17 October 2011

Dear Mr. Reaban,

Attached is a listing of Seattle Symphony principal trumpeters from the period I noticed was missing from the Trumpet Herald listings which you have compiled. What I have compiled from programs, newspaper articles, music store advertisements, and union board minutes at the time:

1903-1908?: Conrad Bieber: There are no personnel listings in programs through some of this period, but German-born Conrad Bieber is listed as principal for the first concert in 1903 in a newspaper article, listed in an October 1904 program which just lists all personnel with no instruments (although his name is misspelled), and is listed as principal in a program from April 22, 1908, which is the only program containing personnel lists back to October 1904 available in the local libraries. Programs for the 1905-6 and 1906-7 seasons are missing completely. There are no personnel listings on programs for the entire 1908-9 season.

1909-10: Otto Lennart.

1910 to 1917: Albert Cleveland n.b. Personnel listings are missing from programs for the entire 1911-12 season.

1917-1919: Paul Lusterman. This gentlemen may have also played the cello in previous seasons.

1919 to 1921: Albert Cleveland

1921 to 1926: no orchestra. The Seattle Symphony folded in 1921 due to lack of money, and went into a 5-year period of dormancy.

1926 to 1935: Someone with the last name Impala. According to various program personnel listings, newspaper articles, and music store advertisements, this guy went by J. Impala, Lawrence J. Impala, L. G. Impala, L. Joseph Impala, Lorenzo Josef Impala, or L. G. (Joe) Impala. Pick one. The “G” might stand for “Guiseppe.” He was born in Italy. I am almost certain this is not more than one person.

1935 to 1939: LeRoy Clark

1939 to 1941: Edward Krenz

1941 to 1942: Albert Cleveland

1942 to 1945: Edward Krenz

1945 to 1947: LeRoy Clark

The late 1930s and the Second World War years are kind of a musical chairs among three people, but news articles from 1939 to 1941 confirm that Edward Krenz and Albert Cleveland were designated as principal for those respective years. The union board minutes denote that the Symphony requested an imported 1st trumpet for the 1941 season, which implies that the incumbent had left. It looks like the importation did not materialize, since Albert Cleveland took over, for one season (perhaps as an acting principal?) and he had been around since 1909. Krenz did not play in the 1941-2 season, but returned as principal in 1942. LeRoy Clark is listed as second trumpet during the 1941-2 season, then disappears until 1945. A 1946 program biography states that LeRoy Clark ”has been with the Seattle Symphony continuously since 1927, except for three war years when he worked as material clerk in a pipe shop of one of our war plants.” William Cole was appointed to the position in 1947 by conductor Carl Bricken. Cole at that time was touring the country playing in Les Brown’s band, and was registered in the Los Angeles union local. LeRoy Clark raised a big ruckus with the union board about losing his position. Although the union board at first supported Clark, the board’s action was expunged from the minutes the following week, and Bricken’s hiring of Cole was allowed to stand. LeRoy Clark left the orchestra.

Hope this helps.

Greg Dziekonski

And included in the letter was the following “Local 76 AFM Board meeting minutes from 1947”:

Member LeRoy Clark appeared re matter of his position as first trumpet in Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Joe Pine personnel manager of Seattle Symphony Orchestra stated William Cole had been engaged to play first trumpet next season at recommendation of Carl Bricken. REGULAR MEETING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS, Thursday September 4, 1947.

Matter of protest of LeRoy Clark, re matter of first trumpet in Seattle Symphony Orchestra for next season discussed by the board and was moved, that in conformity with our verbal agreement with Symphony management, that there would be no displacements in the personnel of the orchestra for the 1947-48 season, LeRoy Clark be assured position with the Symphony for next season on steady weekly payroll. Motion carried. Pelletier refusing to vote. (McCreary was not present). REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, Thursday September 4, 1947.

Matter of protest of LeRoy Clark, re Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Board action of September 4, 1947, discussed by the Board, and it was moved that, that portion of the minutes re LeRoy Clark in the matter of Seattle Symphony Orchestra be expunged for (sic) the minutes of meeting September 4, 1947. Motion carried, Pelletier, Hainsworth, Smullin, Carey, Voting NO. (McCreary not present). REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, Thursday September 11, 1947.

I went back into my records and found this supporting information provided by Steve Lowe back in September 2004. This information did not allow me to determine who was in the position of Principal trumpet, so I’m thrilled that Greg was able to fill in all of the missing details with his research:

My name is Rex Woodbury, the grandson of Max Woodbury who played with the Indianapolis Symphony Ochestra for over 35 years. I am trying to compile any and all biographical information, pictures, videos, anything. My sister's and I are wanting to create a webpage in his memory so our children and grandchildren and on down the line will never forget the amazing man he was as a trumpeter and a teacher.

If there is any information you have the we could use would be a blessing. I personally am living in Bangkok, Thailand, but the rest of my family lives in Johnson County, IN.

Please let me know if there is any help you can offer use.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

Rex Woodbury

Rex,

Thanks for your message. I remember an article in the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Journal from 1998 that highlighted the career of Adolf Herseth who had just completed his 50th season with the Chicago Symphony. In that article the author provided the names of pictures of other prominent Principal trumpet players in major symphony orchestras. Your grandfather’s picture was included in this article along with the years that he held the principal chair in the Indianapolis Symphony (1937-1968).

I know very little about your Grandfather. I’m hoping that others may join in and provide some interesting stories about his career (I’ll open a separate post so that people can contribute). Can you tell us where he went to school? I’m certain that he would have been in classes with many of the finest players in the country at the time.

I have a friend at church that was a cellist in Detroit for many years and was friends with James Tamburini who was Principal Trumpet in the Detroit Symphony from 1944-1966. He told me that James Tamburini went to school with Leonard Berstein and Samuel Barber. I’m guessing that your Grandfather had similar classmates and it would be fascinating to see if we can do some investigative work to figure it out.

If you have any pictures or stories that you would like to share, I know that this would be a great place to do it. I will include these posts with a link to the folder that I put together for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra

Look in this folder for follow-up information
