I have updated the second post in this folder (our Table of Contents) with a new format. We now have 33 orchestras on the list, so I needed to regroup the ensembles by "country" to make this information easier to view (alphabetical was just too difficult with so many groups).

I will move the Israel Philharmonic list to the Historic Rosters folder soon and we can discuss specifics there. This will keep this folder less cluttered.

brass2002:

Yes, the IPO specialised somewhat in playing Mahler 1, to the point that to hear other Mahler symphonies you had to go to the Jerusalem Symphony concerts (and luckily for me, I got to play with them the 2nd, 3rd and 9th symphonies) although I remember playing in Mahler 2 and hearing Mahler 6 with the IPO.

Anyway, Ken Cox had the best and most present Mahler 1 I have ever heard! He hand picked my Bach C in the US, bringing it over with no case, so that when I first got it it was already scratched all over the bell! But it is a winner horn which I still use. I also bought from him a used Eb Schilke, which has served me well since, not the least for Haydn.

Cheers,
Pierre

Pierre,

Interesting that we share a common experience with Robert Frear. It’s a really small world! I’ll bet playing Ein Heldenleben in that section with Mehta conducting was a true joy! Wow!

Thanks for your input on the Israel Philharmonic. As we put the list together, dates will follow from names, but without a name, it’s VERY difficult to assemble.

The list of orchestras has grown from 33 to 38 in the 2nd post of this folder and I have moved the NBC Symphony to it's final folder and provided a link.

Just an update to bring this back to the top.

We now have 45 orchestras on our list and the Final Folder for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has been opened.

I also figured out how to better use this HTML or BB Code. Check out the Chicago Symphony final folder for the images that I've included!

It took a lot of work, but I've finally finished the New York Philharmonic list!

If you have a story to add, or a favorite recording or lesson experience, please tell us about it in this new folder!

Just on a tangent here but I got an email from Robert Frear, saying that Jim Wilt said hello from me (thanks, Mr Clean!!). He then "Googled" me and found my infamous website, where he wrote "where the heck have You been?"!

What a small world! It is great to be able to reconnect with nice people after all these years!

I have a few recommendations of ensembles to add:
Leningrad Philharmonic
Kirov Orchestra

Could we possibly add some of the prominent opera orchestras?

mconley1986,

Good suggestions! This project will continue to grow and develop as long as there is interest and support. I have found some web site links to these and other groups that I would like to add in the future. Thanks for your suggestions.

Mariinsky Theater Opera and Ballet (Kirov Orchestra) Trumpet Section

Saint Petersburg Academic Philharmonic Trumpet Section

Bolshoi Theater

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Trumpet Players

Gewandhaus Orchestra Trumpet Players

Check out this ITG article: http://www.trumpetguild.org/journal/d96/9612Schu.pdf It has a ton of info on trumpet players in St. Petersburg and was actually what got me interested in the Leningrad Philharmonic or whatever its called now.

Interesting side-note: Yury Fokin (current principal of Kirov) did his grad work at Northwestern with Cichowicz after an undergrad at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

Hi Derek and Everyone Else,

I noticed about 45 major symphonies listed in your second post on this
thread, but I was wondering if the list grew much further, and how many
eventually made your list. Also do you have a fairly current roster for
these groups' trumpet sections. If you can direct me to an appropriate
post, that would be great too! Thanks...

Tom,

This is a continuing project. I work on it in my spare time. Eventually I hope to complete each of the sections for every orchestra on the list, but it’s slow going trying to gather the historical information. To see the “final folders” that contains information about each completed ensemble simply go to the second post in this folder and click on the hyperlinks. I have made good progress with these folders and I think you will enjoy spending time looking at them.

This is a project that I have found to be extremely satisfying. I have had the good fortune to have wonderful conversations with players from around the world who love this genre of music and want to share stories about their life’s work. I am very fortunate to perform the literature that I enjoy so much with an orchestra in Arizona, and while I don’t make my living with my trumpet, it enriches my life so much I can’t imagine not having the opportunity to play in the orchestral setting.

Thank you,

While you are adding opera orchestras, how about some Italian ones?

La Scala
Firenze
Roma

Great stuff Derek. Thank you for the lists.

Tom,

This is a work in progress, and I am soliciting input for future ensembles as I can get to them. I’m at around the 50 mark with ensembles, but I’m certainly not planing on stopping at 50. This is slow going, and in 6 months I have made incredible progress. With the assistance of so many fantastic, enthusiastic players on this list who have lent their time, knowledge, and considerable legwork to find many answers and point me to leads that I would have never found without their help, I am arriving at some very complete and accurate lists. Have a look at these two sites for a HUGE list of orchestras and see what I’m working towards via this project in years, not weeks or months.
