Hi Derek,

Although I apologized to you on your previous thread and by email as well,
now that the dust has settled, I just wanted to tell you again how sorry I am
that Jim and I got into it on your thread. Without knowing what had taken place
between he and I elsewhere, I can see how it would have seemed to you that
I had insulted your work. I want to assure you that this was never my intent
in any way, and I am very sorry for this scuffle breaking out in your home.

I'm sure you probably noticed none of this would have escalater to the point
that it did without monette's incredible harangue of Jim and the classical genre.
If there is ever anything I can do for you please don't hesitate to ask. I have
a list of all the equipement being used by about half of the sections you've
listed. Fifty major symphonies is alot of symphonies, and I know you have
so many more to go. I know it can be overwhelming at times, as I am doing
some similar projects to your's.

Again, please accept my sincerest apologies for what occured on this thread, I
know it is your baby, and that it is very important to you. I don't know if you saw
my lengthy apology at the end of your previous thread, before it got pulled
so quickly, but I want you to know I mean every word of it as well as the
apology I sent you by private email as well...

Respectfully Your's,

Tommy in Texas

Tom,

I view the Trumpet Herald web site as a small neighborhood. There are people working on their cars in the driveway, shooting hoops at the local playground, and sitting in their homes watching TV. Kids are splashing in pools in the backyards, loud parties are going on every weekend down the street. People are doing yard work in the evenings or cleaning up after the occasional seasonal storm. There is just a general niche that everybody has found for themselves and can enjoy the neighborhood, regardless of the activity.

My small part of this neighborhood is the project that I have developed here in the orchestral folder. This is certainly a different environment than you will find in the Religion/Politics forum or the Debating forum. I have designed it in that way. Anyone that enters “my home” will be treated with respect. I have tried very hard to foster an environment that encourages participation, where people can feel free to share information and know that it will be used to make our “neighborhood” a better place. This is something that has taken time to develop. When big time pros stop by and pass on their stories, it enriches our neighborhood in a way that is not possible to measure. It is special and I have not seen so many big names hanging out in one place on the Internet anywhere else. I am honored that they have all stopped by my home and chosen to contribute to my project.

I am very thankful that you have apologized and that you realize how you made me feel. I accept your apology.

Please post responsibly and help to develop an environment where people will want to spend some of their valuable time. The Trumpet Herald is not something to be taken lightly and with the departure of Manny Laureano this morning it’s even more important to understand that all of our actions have consequences.

Now let’s move on with this topic and hope it continues to grow with support from EVERYONE who chooses to stop by.

Take care,

Derek-Thanks for a wonderfully helpful and (what must be) ghastly large effort on a tremendous project. May I ask that the Ottawa Symphony and Albany (NY) Symphony be added at some point? I know at my last check, that the Albany Symphony had Eric Berlin (of Majestic Brass), principal, and Eric Latini as Second. Ottawa has John Ellis as principal, but am not sure about who plays second there.

Thanks again.

tpter1,

Glad you're enjoying the project. I'll add Ottawa and Albany to the list. I have many groups that are in partial completion, and I want to move those to the final folder list before I take on anymore. You'll see these groups added to the list as others are completed.

Thanks!

Derek,
Not to add too much to your ever building pile of things to do but ever thought of adding other asian orchs to your list, like tokyo, singapore, malaysia, bangkok??
These places are so far away but have alot to offer. the more people can know about them the smaller our musical world can be!
Keep up the great work

Cheers

crazycanuck,

I made a good start on these ensembles, but like so many others on my list, they are only partially completed. Here’s what I currently have:

Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra

NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo

Singapore Symphony Orchestra

Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra

Bangkok Symphony Orchestra

Clearly I’ve slowed down on this project, but I’ll step back into the details now and then to see what I can put together. I have a few email messages out right now and will post details when (if) I hear back from them.

Hey Derek,
I saw your posting on another posting asking Jon dante to find out who was playing priniciple trp in Malaysia before larry knopp.
from 98-00 steve Medansky was principle 00/01 Bill Thies was acting principle, 01/02: Per morten Bye was principle, 02/03 trials and subs, 03/04 more subs, 04/05 Larry Knopp, 05/06 subs and trials again.
Some of these dates overlap, like Larry started at the end of the 03/04 season and started the 05/06 season, but for the most part its accurate.
If you would like a list of the Subs and trials I can get you that, but its not small!!!
all the best and thanks fo what you do!!

It's Steve Madancy, not Medansky.

Edit: And he spells his first name Stephen

I won't deny that this is some shameless self-promotion here. I'm moving to Korea to play in one of the orchestras there and I just thought that I would suggest adding these three to your list. There are several more orchestras in Korea, but I believe that these are the primary ones. There seems to be a recent trend in the past few years to have younger westerners from Europe and America move into positions in these groups.

Seoul Philharmonic
Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra
KBS Symphony Orchestra (KBS stands for Korean Broadcasting System)

Hi Paul,
Does this mean you got the job with the Daejeon Phil? if not, do you know who did win the job?

Paul,

Congratulations on your new job! I would certainly list these ensembles if I was able to translate the information on their web pages, or find someone that would be willing to gather some historical information who speaks English. Maybe you would like to take on the role of historian in your spare time and see what you can dig up?

Seoul Philharmonic (I did find the trumpet page, and it shows two players:

Gromov Andrey
??? (Korean Alphabet Characters Only)

I bumped into this picture of a brass quintet at the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra:

Too hard to navigate their site for me, though.

This is as far as I could get on the KSO Symphony Orchestra.

Laureano left?! NOOOOOOOOO

Well, gotta move on, I suppose...

I was wondering if there was anything to be gained by adding the Vienna Philharmonic? I know that the New Year's Concert '07 is to be conducted by Mehta himself.

Seriously, congrats on your new gig.

Here is the progress that I have made with the Vienna Philharmonic. This ensemble is difficult at best trying to sort out "who's on first", but I really liked this quote from the person that I worked with at the ONB:

There is no special mentioning of principal trumpet players or any other instruments in such lists - as I remember the orchestra gave itself the title of a "democracy of kings" once - perhaps this title might help you understanding that everyone out of such lists could take the leading part at any time it is necessary.

Derek,

I sent you a PM with details about the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, so hopefully you'll have time to post it soon.

I agree, it is frustrating that the Korean orchestras don't have english websites. This was one of the big points us "wei gooks" brought up at the SPO weekend retreat a few weeks back. How can any foriegners find out about the orchestras without having access to info in some sort of a common language? Even our rehearsals are conducted in English! As we say here quite often..."That's Korea".

I'll try to help with info about some of the other Korean orchestra with the help of my colleagues.

Oops!

Jeff, why didn't you inform me about this issue...
I'll help you as much as I can.

Anyway, Derek, do not trust google translator especially for korean language. No koreans use computer-based translator for english translation. It is real idiot!

FYI, computer-based translation of korean ↔ japanese or korean ↔ chinese works quite well as english ↔ other western lanquages such as french, german...

For Paul, I'll list some weblink to some korean orchestras while there is not enough or no muti-language support.

If we could take the "Major" out of the heading of this post, I'm sure other TH'ers who work playing the trumpet for a living might offer their own info about the orchestras they work in...

r.

P.S. John Cage and/or jds - If you run into Kang please say hello to him from me. He studied with me in Germany.
