This is awesome! Definitely helps clear up a ton of the mysteries about who was playing on my recordings. Just two questions: what about the Richmond Symphony and Oregon Symphony?

Here's the link to VA Symphony
http://www.virginiasymphony.org/orchestra.php

And this one is for the Richmond Symphony
http://www.richmondsymphony.com/musicians.asp

I do not know who was Principal in Richmond before Rolla Durham. Only know that he won it in the late 70s. The Principal for VA before Dave Vonderheide was Stephen Carlson.

Ed Mirr was principal from 1960 to 1975, when Rolla won that chair. Fulton Lee (who passed away last year) was an original member of the RSO, but I don't know for how long, or what chair.

GizB, thanks. I've always wondered who was there before Durham. I find it kinda funny and ironic that both were trained by Vacchiano. Kinda makes me wonder who the next Principal will have been trained by when Durham steps down.

In Virginia, Geoff McBride was before Dave Vonderheide, then Matt Ernst played a year as acting principal while Dave played a one year position in Atlanta.

Andy,

I got a good start on the Seattle Symphony a number of years ago. Look at this message.

Thanks for bringing it up. If I have some time later this year I might follow up and finish this list.

You don't appear to know what this discussion is about.

OK this is not about trumpet sections of major symphonies....thats what i THOUGHT it was and there is no better example of the best TRUMPET SECTION of any orchestra past or present than the trumpet section of the Chicago symphony on that PINES OF ROME recording...BUT, that is not what this thread is about is it

Just to say:

What a tremendous project, and thank you for taking this on! What could be more important information about a recording of music than the human beings who made that music come to life, and it's such a shame that such information can be so difficult to come by. Bravo for your efforts to fix this!

I'm pretty sure that "'nuff said and ends this discussion!" has nothing to do with what this thread is about.

Noel,

Thanks for the input on the possible additions to our list. When I read the ITG Journal article "The London Sound" I discovered what an amazing number of world class ensembles perform in the city of London. I had no idea a city could support so many top-notch groups. Wow!

Since the real intent of this project is to provide a name to tie with specific recordings of different orchestras, as long as we choose groups that are well recorded, I think it makes sense to add as many as we can.

Being from London, maybe you can see if any of this research has already been done for some of these ensembles. THer Andrew Tomlinson has been providing me with fantastic support (also from the UK), but if we can tap into others who are interested in this project, I know it would be very helpful.

If you can provide any stories or recording/DVD suggestions for the BBC Symphony Orchestra folder that has already been opened that would be great!

Look for the orchestras you mentioned in the Historical Trumpet Rosters folder in the next week or so.

Thanks,

I registered here so I could have a conversation with you about a particular trumpet player that I'm trying to track down through history. This player owned a special Holton Revelation prototype and I'm told, played it in the "Rochester" (nothing more on that). The last name is Jordan and would have played this horn pre-1960. I can fill you in on all the details off the forum or in pm and would like to pick your brain or see if this name is familiar or on record somewhere as a trumpeter in a symphony during that time. I've looked at every single list you have posted here and do not see the name. Thanks

I did a great deal of research about 10 years ago on this project, but no last names of “Jordan” for trumpet players are ringing a bell with me (although Michael and DeAndre are both impressive on the hardwood!) I’m sure you found the reference to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in these lists. While I provided all of the details for the Principal Players in the trumpet section, I looked back in my files and found that Katherine Axtell (Special Collections Assistant at the Sibley Music Library, Eastman School of Music), helped me find all the players in the RPO sections beginning in 1923 through 1969. Some very interesting names in that section over the years

Honestly, I’m not even sure how best to direct your search, because the information that you have is so limited. Maybe contacting the Eastman Music Library could help you uncover something that I missed. Or maybe the Rochester reference is pointing to Rochester, Minnesota. You could try looking into the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and see if they have an archives or possibly point you to a library or historical society in the area that could help you with this research.

Best of luck with your search!
