Hey all,

I've been offered the opportunity to be a featured soloist with a wind ensemble and was wondering what pieces you would recommend? I have thought about the Alfred Reed but I won't be able to play the entire piece so am wondering what else is out there to look at. The group I am playing with is an award winning professional group so the sky is the limit in terms of difficulty.

Well, if the sky is the limit... why not Aerial?

Not sure if anyone other than Hardenberger has even attempted it, but there's a challenge for you.

Oh, there's a concerto for jazz trumpet and orchestra by some Italian trumpeter on Youtube that is incredible! I'm having trouble finding it, and I only know the trumpet player in question from that piece. It's not one of the Andreas (Giuffredi, Tofanelli)... who is it? Shoot, I'll find it 30 seconds after hitting "post," I'm sure.

Rex Richardson has premiered some interesting pieces for trumpet and ensemble lately:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j540BUYpUqM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCi8BlQNIZk

And as the previous poster noted, there are, I dunna, 12 or 15 incredibly sophisticated and awesome concertos / suites / pieces written for Hakan and ensemble, any one of which would fulfill the "sky's the limit" difficulty-o-meter.

There is a band arrangement of the Kennan Sonata. Arutunian also. I've done Kevin McKee's Centennial Horizon with Wind Band several times (West Coast premiere of that version back in 2017 with Sac State). That was fun.

Floyd Werle Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet. Want to talk about a showcase for both trumpeter and band.

Gave me nosebleed just listening to it, though.

Phil Smith recorded Bruce Broughgton's Excursions with the Air Force years ago. I don't know if it's available, but Stanton says they have it. It's an outstanding piece of music.

Ah ha! I just found what I couldn't think of earlier: Aquilanti's Trumpet Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Band, written for Marco Pierobon. Really great piece, highly challenging for all involved.

Do love me some Sleeper Concerto

Good suggestions, it's always fun when people can enjoy what you're playing. One that is short and sweet (8 mins) that I never see played is that Andrei Petrov Concerto on Hagstrom's album.
Editions Bim Petrov

If you're good at trumpet and can just play with their brass, then the Ivan Jevtic Theme and Variations is bananas.

Hi, there’s a trumpet solo piece by Sammy Nestico for trumpet and wind ensemble, but I don’t remember the name of the piece. Also, A Trumpeter’s Lullaby by Leroy Anderson. I wasn’t sure if that one was already mentioned. Ode to Trumpet I think is the Alfred Reed piece you mentioned. That’s nice too and worth learning or attempting.

There is a beautiful piece I commissioned from R. Christopher Teichler called Ballad. https://christeichler.com/solo-trumpet

In the category of contemporary pieces composed and arranged for wind ensemble by trumpet players:

Jim Stephenson's "August in York" comes immediately to mind. It's around 8 minutes in duration.

There are a few longer pieces that come to mind as well, though perhaps too long if the Alfred Reed Concerto is too long:

Tony Plog's "Concerto No. 1"
Jim Stephenson's "Concerto No. 1."

I'll add Erik Morales' "Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano," which is a terrific piece, though it does also require a pianist....

I would second the Jim Stephenson suggestions. You can hear and search his works at composerjim[DOT]com

August in York 8'
Concerto #1 22'
Concerto #2 20'

I have performed James Curnow's brilliant "Concert Piece for Cornet" in its versions for both Brass Band and Concert Band, and it is utterly wonderful! I became obsessed with the piece after hearing Phil Smith's recording on his outstanding album "My Song Of Songs."

Some of my favorites from my performances are as follows. Please note that they lean towards the fun side without being too serious.

Jim Stephenson's Louis Armstrong Tribute
Philip Sparke's Flowerdale
Philip Sparke's Manhattan
Sammy Nestico's Harry James Tribute
Trumpeter's Lullaby for solo trumpet going directly into Bugler's Holiday for 3 trumpets

Richard Rodney Bennett’s concerto for trumpet and wind band is a fine piece , with the slow movement’Elegy for Miles Davis’ particularly impressive.
