Hello friends,

Cantaloupe Island(Herbie Hancock) is momentarily my favorit. And the miles records Kind of blue and Birth of the cool.

Thanks wolfi

You could do worse than take Pat Harbison's suggestion in "65 Essential Jazz Trumpet Albums" and get the Art Blakey _Caravan_ title. That's an exciting record. Wayne Shorter's _Speak No Evil_ is a good choice, too.

Oh man, this is so hard. Empyrean Isles, Hubtones, Caravan, & Speak No Evil are the tops, but how do you not check out Freddie on:

As a leader-Ready for Freddie, Straight Life, The Hub of Hubbard, Red Clay, First Light, Sky Dive, High Blues Pressure, Super Blue, Outpost...

Plus, there's:

Jackie McLean-Bluesnik
Oliver Nelson-Blues & The Abstract Truth
Herbie-Maiden Voyage
Eric Dolphy-Out To Lunch
Sonny Rollins-East Broadway Rundown
Blakey-Three Blind Mice, Ugetsu, Free For All
J.J. Johnson-J.J. Inc.
Dexter Gordon-Generation, Doin' Alright
Bill Evans-Interplay

That ought to straighten you out for a while! Have fun.

You also have to know that, great as these albums are, there is no recording that I've found that is as great as the playing I heard from Freddie one night at the Village Vanguard back in '78 when he sat in with Woody Shaw's Quintet. Those two were trying to kill each other.

Their later records together don't even come close to the level of intensity or artistry that night. It was the Ali/Frasier of the jazz trumpet world!

Bill Adam:

Hearing Hub and Woody Shaw going at it when they were both in their prime, now that would be exciting to hear! As much as I like the album they recorded together, I can't help but to think Woody was holding back a little.

I would have to say Straight Life or Red Clay, those were my personal favorites.

McKinney became a Muslim and adopted the name Kiane Zawadi. He recorded later albums with Freddie under that name. I think he is still marginally active on the NY scene.

I forgot Ready for Freddie for some reason. Definatley a fantastic album. Wayne Shorter plays better with Freddie than he played with Miles in my opinion. And Freddie appears to be playing some of his best licks.

What's that album where Grover, Herbie and George play live with him?

"In Concert?"

I heard Freddie walked out on stage in jeans and a work shirt and just blasted away.

Great duet playing on a solo ride type opening song.

Haven't heard it since the record in the mid-seventies.

For what it's worth (probably not much), my personal favorite would have to be Freddie's first recording under his own name "Open Seseme". I bought the recording while I was in college and upon hearing it and Freddie for the first time thought "this guy is a f@#*ing monster".
