What tools are used in making a mouthpiece?

Hi LUTrumpeter,

Most of the work of making a mouthpiece is done, these days, by lathes that are programmable. The only tools needed other than the ones on the CNC machines are called Back Bore tools. They are used to cut the back bore to the shape and size that was designed. Here I am with at a lathe that is making the top, rim and cup.

Back Bore tools are usually made out of T-15 steel. Really hard stuff compared to the 360 Yellow Brass that most mouthpieces are made from. 360 Yellow brass has 2% lead content, that is why they have to be silver or gold plated. The rest of my interview with Ole Utnes is here:
