hot water and soap should do the trick with a mpc brush. _________________ www.erikveldkamp.com |

soap and water and a mp brush.... soap kills germs, and gets rid of any gunk that might be in there.
But if you are sort of in a hurry you can use some rubbing alcohol.
They also sell mouthpiece sterilizer spray. This bottle of green stuff and is made to evaporate fast and kill the germs. _________________ "All music is folk music. I ain't never heard no horse sing no song." - Louis Armstrong |

Quick and notsodirty method is a spray bottle with Listerine. This is assuming you have already done the soap and water thing, and are switching 'pieces between different players. A couple of spritzes, a quick wipe with a disposable paper towel, and you're good to go. |

I've also used the Listerine as a sterilizer. Hot water should also work. _________________ J. Fowler

Cleaning with soap and water is a good start. However, neither hot water nor soap and water alone will completely "sterilize" a mpc (thus speaks my father, the microbiologist). Listerine should do it, as would any cleaner containing alcohol (such as the aforementioned green spray bottle). Let it sit a minute, then rinse well. Any decent silver cleaner, like Tarnishield, should help clean it up and get it shiny for sale.

If by "sterilize" you mean you want to kill ALL germs, then you must BOIL the mouthpiece in hot water. It will not hurt the mouthpiece or silver finish. After boiling in a small sauce pan, allow the water and mouthpiece to cool completely before you attempt to handle it!
OR, another method suggested by my local health department is to dip the mouthpiece into a solution of 1 gallon water and 1/2 cup Clorox bleach. The bleach will immediately kill all germs. Rinse well and then play away.
I called the health department regarding sterilization of mouthpieces because I am a school band director. You have to be extremely careful these days with kids and mouthpieces.
Listerine and Sterisol spray will kill some, but not all, germs. The above two methods will kill "anything that crawls" including hepatitis and aids, according to the health department.
I just re-read your original post and realized you were talking about your own used mouthpieces, so my mention about the serious diseases is not directed at you. I would do one of the above sterilization procedures if I purchased a mouthpiece off eBay or from any other individual.

Good catch, plankowner110. My dad said he wouldn't use Listerine, but would use bleach. He wondered about the bleach discoloring silver, and/or being difficult to rinse completely clean, but agreed it'd kill the germs (etc.)
As for boiling, some nasty bugs can survive a bit of boiling -- be sure to boil at least three and preferably ten minutes.
Thanks! - Don _________________ Don Herman/Monument, CO

You can also drop by your local music store and buy a bottle of the stuff they use to sanitize their rentals. |

Does anyone know how to sterilize a used mouthpiece?

If you really want to sterilize them, put them in a pressure cooker with water - 15 PSI for 20 - 30 minutes will sterilize them. |

I don't know if you have ever been to Terry's place... the other stuff you are thinking about is in the refrigerator. (:>O _________________ DCB <><

Back on the farm, when we wanted to sterilize a critter we just...
Nah. I don't think that would work with a mouthpiece. |

Like the idea Sam (welcome back, been quiet without you! Although have still been having fun ).
So, leave all mouthpieces in vodka overnight. |

Welcome back Sam - by the way, I was talking to Paul Goodey, and he said every trumpet player Trinity offered a place to this year accepted: there's going to be a lot of us there in September! |
