If you haven't seen COWBOY with Glenn Ford, go rent it. Near the end is a really cool scene in a cantina which features Mendez in person, dressed as a Mexican musician, playing an old cornet (faking, actually). Mendez wrote and performs the soundtrack for that scene. Nice playing! Very descriptive of his style, too.

Mendez also plays on the soundtracks of dozens of other movies. Some of the ones that feature his trumpet are:

Holiday in Mexico
Fiesta
Flying Down to Rio
The Bullfighter and the Lady
Hondo
The Matador
For Whom the Bulls Toil

I thought it was actually a trumpet with a shepards crook, like these.

Dave,

A question for you, a bit off topic: Would you know who played lst trumpet on the soundtrack for "Wild Rovers", a Western made in 1971. Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score. There are some amazingly high trumpet solos, played quite well, and I was just wondering who might have played them.

C'mon, now. Is there really a movie named "For Whom the Bulls Toil"?
In Chicago, they toil for Jerry Reinsdorf.....

Can't help with the movie question, but here is something I've been wondering about for a long time. Who is the soloist in Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"? It sounds an awful lot like Mendez - the vibrato, the sound, the unique manner of a smile on the face while playing, and even the way it is phrased. Anyone out there know if it is him or just who it really is?

Can't help you with the red-nosed trumpet player , but the title of the movie is correct. It is set in Mexico.
