In the early seventies a trumpet player friend of mine lent me his "Caruso" book. This was the first time I heard of Carmine Caruso. I xeroxed the book but failed to copy the front and back covers. I did copy the inside of those however. Recently I started exploring this forum and I noticed that the basic exercises seem to differ from my book. Beginning with THE SIX NOTES and continuing thru all the exercises the notes are all whole notes, not two half notes and a whole as I've seen on this forum. The book consists of a table of contents, which says at the bottom "Sole Distributor, Harold Branch, 42 Cornell Drive, Plainview, Long Island New York 11803."

On the second page it's written "CARUSO GLOSSARY OF TERMS," and at the bottom of that page there is a copyright symbol followed by "1971 6 Note Pub. Co., Inc."

At the end of the book there is a reprint of an AFM article on breath control, followed by a short biography of Carmine Caruso and Hal Graham (?). It mentions that both are available as clinicians.

What do I have? Is this the Musical Calisthentics book always mentioned in this forum, or something else?

Thanks, John

Hal Graham was the vice-president of 6 Note Publishing Company. Carmine was the president. Hal and Carmine worked very closely together. He was trained by Carmine to teach the Caruso method. This was long before Laurie Frink became Carmine's protege. I don't remember the name of the book, but Carmine and Hal published a beginner band method based on the Caruso principles. This might be what you have.

Hal Graham wrote a series of articles about the Caruso method for the Local 802 newsletter. He and Carmine did do a lot of master classes and seminars together.

It was probably a book called "Caruso on Breath Control."

Pat's probably right. I had forgotten about that book, "Caruso on Breath Control".
