Beautiful playing and looking Adams F5 lacquered all-copper bell!! This is hands down the best flugel...and maybe even the best instrument period...that I've ever played!!! That's saying alot since I've owned over 250 horns in my playing career!! Using a Warb. Odneal FLX flugel piece.

Kanstul 1525. As of late, mostly with Conn 7CFL piece... Not to the exclusion of my other mouthpieces, of course.

Is the poll still open after all these years?

Still, an interesting thread.

I play a B&S 3145 Challenger I Series Flugelhorn. I've only ever tried this flugelhorn a Cousenon and a Carol Brass. Of the three, the B&S works best for me. I am very much interested in trying the Kanstul 1025, the Adams flugles and an Inderbinen Wood flugelhorn (Roy Hargrove sounds fantastic on his). I am very happy with the sound that I am getting on my B&S, but it doesn't seem to play as smoothly as my trumpets (could be me). Realistically, I can't imagine me sounding better on a different horn. I am getting a sound that is pretty close to my ideal.

I use Mark Curry's flugel pieces in the 3 size. I have all of the different depths and use them all. I couldn't be happier with the pieces and am not even interested in trying out anything else. I wish that I could say the same for my trumpet mouthpieces.

Warm regards,
Grits

I go back-&-forth between three different MARTIN Fleugelhorns: A super-rare ~Handcraft~ ... a vintage Committee ... and, a modern-era 'Committee' (?).

I use two custom Al Cass mouthpieces ... my "secret weapon". I also have a Dizzy model Al Cass, but it doesn't see regular service, due to the two custom pieces. I modified them myself.

I still have and play my old '76 Getzen 895S with a Reeves 41FE mouthpiece as the setup that I have used for decades. It has a very dark, extremely mellow sound that is very unique. I had a 3rd Valve Trigger added a while back to assist with some slight intonation issues that were fairly easily adjusted by lip, but the Trigger makes the low Ds and C#s into minor adjustments on the fly with barely a thought, so a very nice addition to the horn. A very nice lady from my Church gave me her deceased Husband's Pristine '98 Getzen 895S about 6 months ago. The valves were not even broken in yet and the Trumpet/Flugel Getzen Combo Case is in Mint condition as opposed to my old original very high mileage Combo Case. I use a Reeves 41HF (Huge Flugel) piece to approximate the darker mellow sound that my '76 gets. With the Reeves FE, it is just a little on the bright side and has a more "Trombone" sound than what I'm looking for.

If I ever decide to replace it, I'll probably stick with Getzen and get a new Custom Shop Model. But the other horns do what I need so far, so I'll most likely just stay with those.

Mike

Older Yamaha 731 in Silver with a custom Frost mouthpiece (duplicated from Monette rim). Still love the compact sound that you get with this flugel. Great horn for what I need to do. Purchased off another Herald member years ago. Was thinking of upgrading to a newer Yamaha but decided to stick with the old horn after getting the valves to work better with Yamaha Vintage oil.

Well after 14 years I use the same flugel and I have found two good pieces a Reeves 43F and a 43 HF.

1925 Couesnon ... difficult to play in tune, but has a gorgeous sound that I wouldn't trade for quits.

Hi

I love my Bach 183 with a Bach 3CFL, which I've had for years. I've never felt the need to try anything else.

All the best

Lou

ACB Doubler and Curry 3FL.

Why? Because for around $600 I have a horn that sounds great on everything I need. I've played a few flugels that I like more, but not many. Just a really good, solid horn at a price that almost makes me feel guilty.
