Quad C

Your mention of Bjork started me thinking again about another singer's take on a song about the demise of Chet Baker. KD Lang does this song called "My Old Addiction". Talk about chills...here's a few of the lyrics:

"...this tiny lifeboat can keep my dry. My weight is all that it can stand. If I try to lean just a little, just a splash to cool my feet. All that trickle turns out fickle. Fills my boat up five miles deep." ---and----

"...like these just this morning songbirds, craving upward from the nest..."

"My Old Addiction, now the other side of day. But the page is only scrawl - and I am gone, this afternoon..."

It's hard to put into words the moments that make us scream out for life. This is one of the many songs I put on to experience and in turn, memorize that feeling, that chill, that words cannot describe. Tom Harrell comes to mind. Miles. Chills...

I absolutely love songs like that - songs that just make you say "wow."

Two pieces/songs that ALWAYS give me chills:

Jupiter from the Planets (the slower section... you all know what I'm talking about - especially brass really joins in on that)

and

Stevie Ray Vaughan's performance of Little Wing - absolutely amazing. That's all I can really say - simply amazing.

I like to listen to Roy Orbison - one of the most underrated musicians of our time. Depending on the performance type I can also get psyched up to play with Chris Isaak, Philip Glass Ensemble, Phil Driscoll or Doc Severinsen.

I just transcribed "Crying" by Bjork for my jazz 4tet. What a great tune/artist.....

Alot of times before a gig if I don't feel able to get myself together mentally or have trouble chaneling my emotions, I will listen to Sinatra, slow torch songs that he did later in his life..they had a real fragile quality to them, that helps me out, makes me feel like I'm not the only one who struggles.....This calms me down alot as I have gone through this routine for years and years.
Sometimes I stop there feeling collected and other times I will listen to something to pump me up....anything from Sinatra again to Maynard, Chase, George Clinton (Flashlight always gets me going) James Brown, Hendrix.....anything goes........This usually works for me when I am backstage and kind of have the "Oh &%*# I'm on" feeling..... helps turn anxiety into excitment.

I listen to some metal.... MEtallica, AC DC, G & R, etc. Those great gutar riffs pump me up. Also Adagio for Strings by Barber.

During Marching season I listen to the blue devils recordings that I have.
During Concert season I will listen to Arturo Sandoval's hot house cd specially the song closely dancing. And I will also listen to Maynard's Pagliacii

Sometimes when I can't find my trumpet cd's I will pull out some carlos santana.

Re: Sinatra.

Yeah, I like those songs. I heard that if you're down you should listen to even sadder music to pick you up.

Here's an underplayed song by him-- "Circles"

I remember the day of his funeral. It was in Beverly Hills and the procession afterwards proceeded west, down Wilshire Blvd.

Our oil company had an onsite fire extinguishing class at the same time on our property. Because of the thick smoke from the extinguishers, all the news helicopters came over to US.

And then here comes the fire dept.

We don't do those classes anymore.
