I am a senior in high school and I have never done solo ensemble and was hoping to do it this year. Any suggestions of good music to play that's not extraordinarily hard? I'd kind of have a preference for eerie, minor type of stuff if you guys know of any. _________________ Kanstul/Besson Meha, serial 440

I guess Concert Etude by Alexander Goedicke would fall into the category of what you're looking for, with the "eerie minor type stuff". My recommendation with that would be to not take it too fast, since things can get hairy pretty soon with the technicality of the piece.
But something not too hard...um...Andante and Allegro, by G.J. Roparts. _________________ Chris King

I am working on a piece with a youth orchestra group. It is:
Jean Francaix: Le Gay Paris
for Solo Trumpet, Flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bassoon, contra basson and 2 horns
Quite a fun piece, not too substantial though. Would it be something you are looking for? _________________ Greetings from Hong Kong,

I can't say that the solos suggested above fall into the "eerie, or minor" mood, but they are popular contest solos.
You might like the Fantasie in E-flat Minor (Mi Bemol) by Barat. |

Okay, sorry for my ignorance, what is "solo ensemble"?
Doesn't it mean a trumpet solo piece with an ensemble accompanying? _________________ Greetings from Hong Kong,

its solo and ensemble, basically a competition for either solo players with accompaniment or small (chamber) ensembles. Found in high schools across america, one of the few solo performing venues in America's schools today. Its great fun, espically when your director remembers to sign you up.

I wish it was found in all high schools across America. I think it's a USSBA thing if I'm thinking of the same thing. I don't think BOA does it. MICCA does it but in the spring. It's like I&E for DCI |

I just went to my HS scrap book and looked up some things. According to the medals I got, Our "solo & ensemble" festivals were judged and run by the ISSMA, Indiana State School Music Association. If I remember correctly, the solo portion also served as prelim auditions for All-State band. If you wanted to move on to the "next round" (State solo & ensemble festival), you had to perform a "group I" piece and recieve a certain "score" from your judge.
To bring it back to the original post, ISSMA publishes a list of acceptable group I music. Although it probably doesn't exactly dovetail with your state's list, you might want to look it over. There's a lot of standard stuff on there.

Finally, our band director always helped us pick our music if we asked him. Perhaps you could ask yours. Not everyone played group 1 stuff, either. In fact, most people didn't. Most people just did it for the chance to perform a solo or with a small group of their friends. I remember a few people even composed and arranged their own ensemble stuff. Concert Etude by Alexander Goedicke
A fantastic selection for a first serious solo!
How about the second movement (Aria) of the Flor Peeters Sonata? If you can play only one movement of a solo that should fill your request for "eerie, minor type of stuff". Here is a link for where you can find it. The other two movements are wonderful but are harder. Pretty good colege audition material! http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_inside.html?cart=33095440461701506&sku=PE.P06240&page=cover
Another great one would be the Kent Kennon Sonata. Here is a link to that piece. http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_inside.html?cart=33095442111701813&sku=WB.TS0026&page=01

Try Barat's "Andante et Scherzo" or the Kent Kennan Sonata. Both of those pieces are good and easily playable. |
