I'm going to be going back to school after several years of being away. Needless to say I haven't played seriously since 1/1/98. Where is a ood place to start? Should I just start up on SA or is there a better place to start?

Thanks

Vessehune

Hi there,

Systematic will work. If you can already play Pedal Notes, then start out on Lesson 2 in the book. Claude only wrote that first lesson to help students to learn to play Pedal Notes.

Systematic Approach is in my opinion, the best basic development routine available in a “one-size-fits-all” type development routine. If you want something better than Systematic Approach, I can give you personal assignments via telephone and internet (e-mail) that will be custom created for your present level of playing and also based on what type of playing you want to develop (Jazz, Orchestral, High Note Specialist, All-Around Good Player, etc.). But, of course this would cost some money (but not that much).

Personal lesson plans assigned by me would be based not only on the material in Systematic Approach (which represented Claude’s thinking and knowledge in the early ‘60’s), but also on the rest of Claude Gordon’s knowledge and development as he continued to play, teach and grow for 30 years after writing Systematic Approach, combined with my own 20+ year career as a full-time professional trumpet player in a variety of settings.

Gee, count the 60 years of Herbert L. Clark’s experience as perhaps the world’s greatest Cornet Soloist and teacher (that he passed on to Claude Gordon), add the 70 years of Claude Gordon’s experience as a top professional trumpet player and teacher (that he passed on to me), then add to that my 20+ year career as a professional trumpet player and teacher, and you’re getting over 150 years of experience, all in one package! Wow!!!

Sincerely,

John Mohan
