I got my hands on a copy of musical calisthenics today. As I read the first few pages I was intrigued to see that Caruso advocates foot tapping. I once had a music teacher yell at me for doing so. This was as an adult.

Carmine definitely recommended foot tapping. And yes, there are some who don't like foot tapping. They feel that it is a visual distraction to the audience when you are performing. And some teachers are not in favor of foot tapping because they want you to internalize the beat. But when you are practicing your Caruso exercises, you should definitely tap your foot. It is an integral part of Caruso's teachings.

I studied with Carmine and also with one of his students. The foot tap is essential when doing the routines. Forget everything when playing music.

I see. So the foot tap is used in preparation but not on the band stand.

Foot tapping is an essential part of doing the specific Caruso exercises.
Doing Caruso exercises is not done during a performance or group rehearsal.

Physical 'foot taping' during practice helps by strengthening the physical and mental coordination of synchronizing the 'intent' and the 'action' of playing the note at the 'right time'.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

Does the foot tapping need to be audible? My shoes are all rubber soled, so I can feel the foot tapping but not hear it.

It does not. But (for CC calisthenic practice) the time (the most important aspect of CC practice) needs to come from within yourself, not an external reference like a metronome or conductor.

I struggled with foot tapping. If I do not make a conscious effort it is spastic. So I pull up on the "ands". So 1 AND, 2 AND etc. It helps with subdividing as well. Mr. Caruso wanted mental subdivision down to 16ths.

When I was playing well I subdivided to 32s.

Happy tapping!

I'd suggest anyone interested in Caruso find Julie Landsman's videos on Youtube. They're really excellent.
I have a former string student majoring in music ed as a voice major. Somewhere along the way she started French Horn. I gave her the link to these videos to check them out.
I'm getting together with her tomorrow for lunch. I'll find out if she looked into them.
