Yeah, he's a crazy man, that's for sure. And, you can study with him at the University of Washington! That's pretty cool, Allen Vizzutti at State U. money!

Not to mention that Vern Seilert is the new jazz prof. He played the trumpet jazz book to Scotty Englebrights lead in the 1 o'clock band at UNT.

UW, someplace to look at for trumpet education...... sorry this is such a tangent...

Hey.Yeah, when I heard his opening lick I was astonished! How does he get that accuracy????!!!!!!! ....

Do you think he practiced a little????? My husband and I listened to that CD when we knew he was coming to town. -- & ITG sent a copy of his version with a journal a few years ago. Everything is displaced octaves. We would just look at each other in amazement until one of us would say "do you think he practiced that a few times?"
He soloed with our community band 3 years ago and he gave a clinic, he played Carnival of Venice, not that version but it was amazing to hear him play - the smooth technique!!!! he did throw a double C in the cadenza.
Anyway I had the privilege to play some of his duets with him and drive him to the airport so we had a good chance to chat. His technique for the intervallic stuff he does is steady airflow and vowel sounds, I believe he uses slight pivot also. and of course practice is the big secret.

I saw vizzutti do a masterclass once where he opened with playing carnival - some arban variations and some of his own. He takes huge breaths!! - he just drops his jaw a bit and you feel like your gonna get sucked in there!! if you listen on the recording there is on variation where he plays it slurred then tongued with a breath in between - you can really hear how much gas he is sucking in. Bizarrely in his masterclass he advocated hand vibrato - possibly the only pro i have heard of who uses this.

I think that Allen’s playing is great! I have almost all of his jazz play-along compact discs. I like to listen to him play, play along with him, and then try to imitate his style and sound. Of course, I use these compact discs only after I have worked on Carmine Caruso’s Musical Calisthenics, ear training, chords, and scales. I believe that my playing has improved by playing along with him as well as studying trumpet with Laurie Frink. What a wonderful combination for practicing trumpet!
