Elton Benge used the French Besson as his prototype. Was there only one model of French Besson when he used that or were there more, i.e. an orchestral version, a more “commercial” version – what? Thanks.

Benge used his own Besson as the model.
He sought to improve some of the things he felt the Besson was slightly lacking in. He constantly tinkered with Chicago models, always trying to make them better.
A great Chicago Benge is truly a marvel of his skill. They have a sound and a "ring" to them few horns match.
Burbank Benges were also gems. LA started to get a little more hit or miss, but a good one was a great horn.

Thank you both. I don't see from the information provided that this was a certain model of Besson. Can I assume, then, that there was only one model type at the time?

This may answer my question. Which is - Besson only had one model, the Brevete, at the time and it was used both for classical and commercial purposes.
