You should do the work yourself, you really cheat yourself if you don't....but sometimes we don't have time....I have almost all of Brownies solos transcibed and would be willing to sell them for a price if your interested.....they are hand written, chords above the measure, they aren't perfect rhythmicly but are close, contact me privately or do a google search I'm sure someones published something of the type. |

Sweet, man I had no idea that was out there! That is soo awesome. I mean I know it's good to figure by ear... but I do that when I copy down like arangments of stuff that miles played and stuff. I mean, I transcribed the I'll remember April intro and outro like thingy's. And I write out bass parts for our bass player off recordings alot. But I mean, it still takes me forever to write out transcriptions and I want clifford solo's like now... Thanks a ton that is sooo damn sweet. |

don't want to start a ruckus here but, in an effort to pass onto other players what i've observed over the years, it is not well received when a white player calls a black player "jim" when his name is "james" or "cliff" when is name is "clifford" or (worse) "satchmo" when his name is "louis." if you don't happen to play in a multiracial environment you may not be aware of this but, trust me, such lapses do not go unnoticed. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I go to one of the most diverse colleges in the nation and have many black friends and have never encountered anything like this. Where does this come from? Whats it rooted in? I just want you to expand on it a little more, thanks. |

we're talking about some very subtle nuances, here, and my impressions may not apply in every case, but here's more detail, for what it's worth:
it's been my observation that african-americans often have strong preferences about names, and they can resent it when others, especially whites, take liberties by presuming that nicknames are okay.
as a journalist, i recall covering a news conference given by wynton marsalsis in which a white reporter asked a question about "louie" armstrong and marsalis, while not quite correcting the reporter, let him know that it's "louis." (fortnately, the reporter did not address marsalis as "wyn.")
that seemed to confirm my observation, formed over many years, that african-americans - musicians or not - often prefer not to have their given names shortened. for example, they prefer "james" to "jim" or "jimmy" and and "william" to "bill" or "billy" and "lawrence" to "larry."
i know there are many exceptions as in "billy eckstine" and "billy cobham" and "ray nance,"etc.
but as a general rule, it's "lester young" not "les," "clifford brown" not "cliff," and "lawrence brown" not larry.
of course, when a drummer walks up and stick out his hand and says, "hi, my name's philly jo," or a trumpet player says, "the name's 'dizzy,'" well, that's it, then.
but until you get that kind of permission, i think the more formal approach is safer and more considerate. _________________ Jim Hatfield

hold the phone. i woke up this morning thinking about my previous reply and, just for the heck of it, did a search of jazz artists a-z in cdnow.
before i was even through the c's i found:
gene (not eugene) ammons
monty (not montgomery) alexander
nat (not nathaniel) adderly
willie (not william) bobo
teddy (not theodore) buckner
benny (not benjamin) carter
ron (not ronald) carter....you get the idea
guess my observations about african-americans and nicknames aren't as keen as i thought. altho i do think it's generally a good idea to call people what they seem to prefer, regardless of race.
for the time being, at least, you can call me wrong. _________________ Jim Hatfield

charles,
how do you know i'm white?? is it equally "taboo" for an african-american to use a nick-name. i don't even consider it a nick-name, "james" can be "jim", "william" can be "bill". all this sounds like the political correctness garbage that washington spits out. it has nothing to do with racial slurs in my book. i think all this was very innocent and it has been made to be something it was never intended to be. since you don't like nicknames then i won't call you "charlie", , just kidding, i'm not trying to start a war here. all i'm trying to say is people are to sensitive these days. my name is "frank" and you can call me "francisco" and i could care less. you are right though, i'm white. my music pastor is an african-american and i wouldn't trade my freindship with him for anything in the world. he's a super guy, great keyboard player as well, and this stuff just never comes up. i'll have to get his opinion. charles i'm sure your a great guy but i just think that throwing the racial deal out there happens far to often. any reply is appreicated. |

He he he
I think you keep calling him Charles because of the Charles Mingus quote at the bottom of his posts. That would be cool though, if Mingus was hangin on the TH. Can't imagine that would happen, even if he was still alive. _________________ Nicholas Dyson
