My school has a concert for senior concertos at the end of every school year, where seniors audition to perform a concerto for their last high school piece.

This year, our jazz band lead trumpet player is doing A Night in Tunisia for his senior concerto with the jazz band, and I'd like to do the same next year.

What are some jazz songs that could work for this context? I've thought about Salt Peanuts, but I am not sure if it's the best song.

I have a preference for "Latin" jazz, but any style could work.

Thank You!

You've confused me with your use of the word "concerto". Do you mean "feature"?

I did "La Virgen de la Macarena" as part of my senior recital in college, that came to mind since you mentioned interest in the Latin music genre. There's a number of different arrangements out there but I believe the Koff/Mendez arrangement is for concert band.

I remember Clifford and Manteca are really good options! Thank you for these!

Yeah, I want to do a jazz band trumpet feature, but since the concert/ symphony program is bigger than the jazz program, the " solos" concert is called the concerto concert.

It's a good piece, but I'd like a jazz band piece, and am not sure if it is long enough, since the songs have to be around 6 minutes. Thank you though!

I'd be surprised if you find a jazz band trumpet feature of six minutes duration. If you're talking about a big-band arrangement featuring trumpet, yes, there are recorded pieces that are six minutes in length, but those are sprinkled with solos from several other instrumentalists as well. Apparently approval has been given for this year's senior lead trumpet player to do "A Night in Tunisia." I suggest that you find out what arrangement that is so that we can recommend a similar type of arrangement for you to perform next year.

He told me he just has a standard JWPepper arrangement, and he wrote the feature part himself, taking from the first and fourth part, and also adding things from famous transcriptions like Arturo Sandoval's.

I could try and do the same on something like muse score.

Should I try and find an already arranged feature, or should I try and make my own for a song I like?

That's helpful information. Let me ponder. I'll be back in touch.
