Right on! I love Bonds, and his candidness about them being "entertainers" and it is "time to move" on was a classic quote!

When a kid my grandpa knew the grounds keeper of Candlestick. We got into the locker rooms once as guests and I saw: Mays, McCovey, the Alou brothers, Perry, Haller, Cepeda, Jim Ray Hart, Marical, etc. Then we went out and watched the "Big Red Machine" board their bus. What a day! I was shocked at how many smoked cigarettes.

Cubs taking the NL pennant? Isn't that what they call "fantasy baseball?"

I really want to say that this will finally be the year that the Reds make the playoffs and make a run for it, but the pitching staff is still far too weak to compete. I'm going to go with the Cardinals for the NL again.

I hope the reds actually do something this year. Everybody looks healthy and they seemed to have acquired some good players during the offseason I just don't know...

As a native San Diegan I've also got to pull for the Padres. As always their pitching might be a question mark but they've got the talent everywhere else.

First of all... Yankees SUCK!!! Jeter Sucks!!! Now that I got that out of my system; the spankees are the most overrated team in the history of sports. $164M payroll??? Ridiculous. Going out and getting a 41 year old pitcher isn't going to help them. Good thing they picked up Tino Martinez this year, maybe he'll be better than Mr. Steroid Giambi. What did he hit, like .260 with 20 homers last year. Yeah, that's a corner infielder I want.

What?!?
Yankees got an old pitcher? WHat about curt chilling
Boston fans are straight hypocrites, Don't they know they
have the second highest pay roll.

The red sox are full of no bodies. How can jeter suck when he is
the best short stop in the AL.

Easy there, Dominico. Dont let the Sox fans get to ya. Afterall, they do currently own the bragging rights with Yanks fans! I would say they deserve a year of talking a little smack against you Yanks (and believe me I hate saying that cause I hate the Sox almost as much as the Yanks).

If we've learned something from the past, it's that spending gazillions a dollars does not guarantee winning. It only improves the chances. That is all.

Sure the AL of the past 10 years has been dominated by the Yankees and the Red Sox. But the Yanks havent won in 5 years and the Sox, until recently, hadn't won since 1918 (yes, I said it Sox fans. Deal with it!) The Orioles and Rangers of the early and mid 90's spent tons of money. How much did they win? When is the last pennant win for the Dodgers?

The imbalance of payrolls allows the large markets like NY and Boston to make mistakes. A team like the Milwaukee Brewers can't afford to sign someone and have them not produce. The Yanks can sign a Giambi, have him suck, and still have money to go out and sign a Tino Martinez for insurance. Smaller market teams just have to be smarter. And most of them are not! (this coming from a Brewers fan)

As an avid Yankee AND Red Sox hater (love the rivalry, though) would I love to see them both lose horribly this year? Of course. But I also accept that they both are more than likely to be in the playoffs.

However, i would not be surprised if neither of them is in the WS, though. Teams like the Twins and Angels are very tough to beat, and the Mariners and White Sox are much improved. Any of those teams could take the Yanks or Sox in a 7 game series.

Regarding Jeter, he is the man. Is he the best defensive SS in the game? No. Is he the best SS on his team? No. He is below average defensively. BUT, he is a winner. He plays hard and is incredibly smart. I would take him on my team any day if it meant that the Brewers would win a WS 4 times in 5 years! And I think pretty much every Sox fan would do the same. And they'd be stupid is they didnt (but that is another rant).

Cant wait for the season to start!

Oh yeah, THE CUBS SUCK!

Jeter is below avarage defensively?!?
Are we talking about the same jeter?
You most be joking because he is the best
shortstop in the game (A rod don't count) overall.
He didn't have a great season last year but that
dosen't mean he is not the best.

Sorry Julian, but the stats speak the truth.

From 2001-2003 Jeter ranked near or at the bottom in the Majors in Range Factor and Zone Rating. Range factor is the measure of how many balls you get to and Zone Rating is the measure of how many balls you successfully field.

In 2003, Jeter was dead last in both, with a 3.75 RF and a. 791 ZR. By contrast, the leaders in both categories were at 4.96 RF and .896 ZR.

So what does that mean? Basically, Jeter did not get to many balls, and the ones he DID get to he booted.

Jeter did improve in 2004, with a 4.46 RF and a .847 ZR, both middle of the pack. A lot of that can be attributed to the fact he had a Gold Glove third baseman next to him in A-Rod, whose range made up for Jeters lack of it.

Jeter won his first Gold Glove last year, again probably due to the fact that the world's best SS was playing third (A-Rod).

The fallacy that Jeter is a defensive wiz is based on TWO amazing plays he made. All can agree that the play against Oak in the ALCS a few years ago and the diving play in the stands last season are outstanding plays.

But the bottom line is that Jeter is not all that great defensively.

BUT, he is a winner and I respect him for that.

MAN, am I a baseball geek, OR WHAT?

Since when is all numbers?
Jeter has being regarded as one of
the best, if not the best, for many years before
those plays. I remenber a couple years ago
arod garciaparra and jeter were the best in the game.
Back then he still didn't have A rod numbers but he was still
great. Jeter has lost some appeal but he gon b bak this year.

Hey, buddy... I thought BrewBlue's stats would have put you straight. Apparently not. Don't argue baseball with John... unless you want to point out the obvious fact that the Brewers stink, but then he'd probably be the first to agree with you.

It is amusing to me to listen to a Yankees fan talk smack about the Sox after committing the biggest choke job in professional team sports history last year. I like Jeter and I am a Sox fan. I like our aquisition at SS this year more than Jeter though. Jeter's been great for the game and is a true winner, but let's not get carried away. He's not the best and he's not even as good as he used to be as an all-around player. There are several players at his position I would prefer to him both defensively and offensively.

Enjoy the smack-talking... (choke... cough... choke...)

- Josh

Red sox fans should not even point out the choke. Especially since you were choked by Aaron fu***ng boone, 1986 METs, 1963 Yankees and others. The Red sucks are legendary for choking so what are you talking about? You win ONE time and you get gassed. IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. when we win, is routine, people see it as a regular event. The red sucks actually winning should have being frown upon, I would be shame if it took me 86 years to do something. I guess in 2091 you will be in bragging again right? All while saying how derrick jeter the 4th is not great, even thought he is better then ANY red suck on the field. Better then manny, all the bum "team" players who don't know how to shave, and who ever you want to name. Jeter is not about numbers, so don't say so and so has better stats. Especially since when somebody points out that brady has crappy numbers you people go screaming how it isn't the numbers. It's the same with jeter. I can point out many QBs better then brady, but they aren't winning. Don't get me wrong, i hate the patriots.

Julian,

no one is arguing that Jeter is GREAT baseball player. As both Josh and I said, we would take him on our team in a millisecond.

But the numbers dont lie. Jeter is NOT a good defensive shortstop. He makes up for that with his offense, hustle and attitude. Take away his offense, and he is no better than David Eckstein(possibly worse, his D is not as good as Eck's).

But the fact is Jeter is a fantastic offensive player and a great team leader! Because of that it is very easy to accept his defensive shortcomings.

Plus, he's a U of Mich grad, so he's gotta be great!!!
