Although some will argue it's not jazz I like the wynton jazz books there are some good solos in there. _________________ Andrew Fowler

there are a number of books containing transcriptions of great solos by people like clifford brown, blue mitchell, freddie hubbard, anothers. learning these will help you get a feel for playing good jazz and give you some phrases you can drop into other tunes.
you may also want to get a fake book and try embellishing the written melody with passing tones, different meters, etc.
as a starting point, check out the materials available online at jamie aebersold's site:
http://www.jazzbooks.com/
eventually, you'll want to use the chord symbols written under the tune's head and bridge to create your own melodies. this is what the great jazz players have always done to create good music. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I remember clifford, Great solo. I played it my sophomore year and it was pretty easy and a very effective solo. I think i played the version arranged by vax or something like that. Awesome feature! _________________ Byron

Anybody claiming wynton isn't jazz is insane. Let's save that kinda talk for people like Kenny G, a man who uses music to trumpet his own ego (setting a circular breathing record that any circular breather who cared could break). Wynton is the real deal and so his is whole family. _________________ Richard |
