Bobby Shew's "Salsa Caliente"

I own the Bobby Shew CD already mentioned. It's a nice collection of stuff.
Any Arturo Sandoval CD would be a good addition to your collection as well. He played with Irakere before defecting from Cuba, so their discs are also a good idea. _________________ Chris King

You might want to check out some of the Juan de Marcos "Afro Cuban All Stars" CDs. My favorite of the bunch is the "Live in Japan" CD/DVD combo. It's pretty much the only live album I like to listen to. 98% of the horn playing on that album is really tight, with only a few clams thrown in.
The real benefit from the ACAS CD's is getting to hear the old-timers play along with a new generation of players. _________________ Ron Banks

Actually, come to think of it I've been listening to a lot of live albums lately since getting back into jazz, so while the recommendation for the CD stands, my comment about the live albums I like isn't quite true.... _________________ Ron Banks

Michel Camillo's One More Once is a good latin big band album with Faddis playing lead. For actual salsa, try Jose Alberto aka El Canario, or Eddie Palmieri. |

You might also check out Poncho Sanchez's 'Latin Soul'. Good latin jazz with a very good 4 piece horn section. _________________ Gary Anderson

If you want great Latin trumpet soloists, the guys to check out are Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, Negro Vivar, Chappotin Valdez, and Jesus Alemany. Alemany is Cubanismo's soloist. The other guys are older, and you can find them on Cachao records, Eddie Palmieri records, and other older Cuban records. The conjunto bands in the 50s usually had 3-4 trumpet sections.
If you want trumpet section stuff, like salsa, I'd check out anything with Victor Paz playing lead. He was THE cat back in the day. A lot of Eddie Palmieri records have him on it. Chico O'Farrill and Machito records, too. Or just check out anything on the Fania label from the 1970s, specifically Ray Barretto Indestructible and Rican-Struction, and the Fania All Stars live at Yankee Stadium.

Oh, I forgot a few. The Spanish Harlem Orchestra is worth listening to and was recommended to me by several musicians. You may want to check out Dizzy Gillespie's "Afro" (received five stars from Down Beat in 1956). I agree with Matt about Fania All Stars at Yankee Stadium and from the 1970's. I have a good, current recording of them that is "accepted in the jazz and Latin circle" with Jon Faddis called, “Rhythm Machine." A fellow musician told me that Fania was different from its earlier days in that it had more tongue and cheek to the playing, but it is all good. I will tell my TH friend Pedro about this thread, as he is more of an expert with this type of music than me. Pedro, are you there?

CARIBBEAN JAZZ PROJECT is a group I recently discovered. They swing pretty hard. The trumpeter on their latest release is Diego Urcola. I really dig his ideas. They've feature Randy Brecker and Ray Vega on some earlier releases.
Others to check out would be:
CHICO O'FARRILL
H.M.A. Salsa/Jazz Orch.
CUBANISMO
Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros (The man is a Cuban Freddie! A must to hear).
EDDIE PALMIERI (my favorite)!
THE TROPICAL JAZZ ORCH. ( An all Japanese group)
And I once heard this Bone-Player. I think his name is Boch?? Have you heard his group? _________________ LAWLER TL-6

CHICO O'FARRILL | I've actually been in this band for about 7 years now. Thanks for the props. The trumpet section is a monster. Mike Mossman, Jim Seeley, me, and Valerie Ponomarev.

Luis Aquino has been the top recording studio trumpet player in Puerto Rico for at least the last 10-12 years, probably longer. Some albums he is on include:
Frankie Ruiz: "Tranquilo" and "Mirandote"
Rey Ruiz: "En Cuerpo Y Alma"
Willie Rosario "Sorpresas"
The lead and section work on these albums is phenomenal, and the production is first class. Pretty much any time you turn on a latin radio station you'll be listening to Luis, playing commercial salsa or merengue.
Also, Oscar D'Leon's album "El Rey de Los Soneros" has lots of good trumpet playing on it, both lead and solos.
Luis "Perico" Ortiz is an amazing melodic soloist, and has lots of recordings under his own name and with Fania.
There's also some monster playing on the Puerto Rican All-Stars album "Tribute to the Messiah," I think that's with Juancito Torres. |

The Bronx Horns - instrumental latin jazz
They have 2 CD's, which may no longer be in print. "Catch the Feeling" is one of my favorite CD's, period. Their 2nd CD was called "Silver in the Bronx", featuring arrangements of Horace Silver tunes. This is also a great recording. Ray Vega is the trumpeter with the group.
If you can find either of these, get them. You won't be disappointed.

TrumPF,
Have you ever worked with Senor Aquino? I have heard his name come up many times when talking about great salsa trumpet players........
I am doing more salsa/merengue work these days, and trying (if possible) to use Luis as a "sound model". Do you know what he uses? |

Mikeytrpt,
I was lucky enough to work with him a couple of times. He really is amazing, and a real gentleman. I don't remember what he was using, but I believe that for a while he was using a Dennis Wick 4E mouthpiece. However, he's one of those guys that can literally play any equipment, and still sounds like himself. I've heard that he has gone through a lot of different horns and mouthpieces, but as you know by listening to him it doesn't seem to matter that much, he pretty much always sounds great. |
