I don't teach much (I have 11 students, and that is 11 too many), but I do make my living playing.

Not so. The words "I do" do not appear in any wedding ceremony I know of. It's actually "I will".

I have for 27-years -- Middle school Band Director for over 20 years in a very large, but very poor, middle school. It was a very rewarding job as I took the program from mediocity to being one of the best in our state. I took them from a total of 76 students to 411 when I left. We went from 1 performing band to 4 performing band plus the beginners.

Now I teach in a very small private Catholic school where I'm rebuilding a program. I started with 41 last year and ended the year with 101. I hope to build to at least 140 this year.

I love my job as a band director, and will tell you that poor public or wealthy private -- KIDS ARE KIDS! They all need our love, and they will all perform at what ever level we expect!

Good thread, here!

As for me, I teach more than I gig, and it seems like many many many are in that boat. It is interesting, many of my friends I teach with have degrees from all of the big name music schools....this has potential to evolve into an interesting thread actually....easily sparked by people's reactions to this statement:

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

What do people think about this?

There is alot of grey area in this statement - some truth and some fiction.

An old teacher swore by this philosophy. It was ironic...he was teaching for who knows what reason (I'm not privy to the man's finances or internal motivational cues....can't assume anything, really) though he was recently retired from a high profile, full-time performing job. Without a doubt, he could "do" though he was teaching when I was with him.

What do you all think? Would love to see the debate on this one. From my experience, it seems that there are plenty who can "do" who choose to teach out of some sort of desire to (look at any conservatory faculty), and there plenty of those who "can't" who teach out of economic necessity, or ideally because that is where their heart is in the first place (like it seems with bandman322). Although, there are plenty of those who "can" who teach out of necessity as well, due to scarcity of work, or whatever other circumstance. Or does this mean they "can't" if we want to be really strict with our parameters?

Personally, I teach out of economic necessity (I consider myself in between "can't" and "can" while getting closer to "can" every day!) but also because I enjoy it, much more than I would have thought I did as an undergrad. Even if I did have a full-time performing gig, even if I could play circles around Smith, Smedvig, Gekker, et al., I would still take on a handful of students, including beginners, just because I find the perspective so valuable.

Up is down, down is up....confusing, this is! Where's Yoda to sort things out?

Can't wait for the opinions, esp. from some of our most opinionated members!

Thanks,
Greg

Im' trying to put myself in a position to make a living playing trumpet. I wouldn't mind teaching (private lessons....), but Im' not really interested in teaching at a middle-school/high school level. That is a lot of work for something that Im' not passionate about.

A lot of people like to tell me to do something else, and it's kind of depressing, but I will still do it....hopefully.

Those who can't teach inspect, or go into management.

There are many top players who are amazing teachers, but there are also a large number who are terrible teachers. Musically they are very inspiring, but their teaching leaves much to be desired.

If you are just teaching to make money - do your students a favour and stop.
Teaching is not a profession to enter if you want to make money, teaching is a lifestyle choice. If you don't enjoy it, don't do it - your lack of love for what you do will come across in every lesson you teach.

My head of music was a classic (and rather depressing) example of this. Failed Oboist. Considering how few oboists there are, you would think that they'd be in relatively high demand, so that's even worse!

Some who can't teach, insist on trying to teach and do more harm than good!

Almost right...

"Those who can - teach AND do. Those who can't teach - merely do."

heh, we talked about that yesterday in my teaching practicum class. One of the Profs said he hates that quote. It is not that we can't do, it is that we chose to teach. And because of that, we spend more time learning how to teach, learning the otehr instruments, conducting, etc. that we aren't as good as a performance major.

but to quote Jack Black in School of Rock: "Those who can't do, teach. And those who can teach, teach gym"
