I am currently working on the Trumpet 1 in B-Flat excerpt for Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique Fourth Mvt. "Marche au Supplice." I am very familiar with Symphonie Fantastique and the fourth movement, but the excerpt is not in the Norris book or on Phil Smith's cd. Those are usually my "go to" places for info on how to play excerpts. If I remember correctly, the Hickman Volumes contain many excerpts that are NOT in the Norris book, but they give no instructions on how to play them. The excerpt is fairly easy and I have been playing it on C trumpet. The one thing that bothers me is it almost seems too easy and I want to make sure I'm not missing any stylistic items. Any advice from the orchestra players out there? Thanks!

I also should have specified, rehearsal marking 53 to six after 55. Thanks!

Might not be what you're looking for but I'd start with sampling some recordings, to see how it is commonly payed.

My favorite is the John Elliot Gardiner recording on period instruments, but in your case check out some more modern interpretations. There is a recent LA/Dudamel(?) on Itunes same with New York/Gilbert.

Seems to me like they just want something straight ahead to look for some "basics" - good sound, good pitch and good time. This may be an easy excerpt to overblow a forte, for example. There's also plenty of fourths and fifths to show relative pitch. Last but not least, there's those pesky off-beat accents on the sixteenth notes.

Some thoughts:
You'll notice most orchestras lean towards double dotting or 'snapping' the rhythms.

Don't try to sound like the entire NY Philharmonic all by yourself.

Not all excerpts are difficult or require extensive coaching. Listen to recordings to get the style, and have fun.

Also be aware that there are both Trumpet 1/2 parts and piston (cornet) 1/2. (I'd much rather play the piston 1 part for this work.)
