Anyone have any experience playing a large bore 60's vintage Paris-LeBlanc Bb trumpet?

If so, how did/do you like it? How would you compare it to other horns, vintage or contemporary?

I'm asking because I just popped for one on eBay and I'm going through that "jeez I hope I'm gonna love it when it gets here" phase.

I bought it because I have a '60s Paris-LeBlanc flugel that I'm crazy about.

Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me.

Hi Jim,

I have a 60s vintage AL Hirt Special that was my first trumpet. Almost 40 years later, it still plays well. The sound is quite different than a typical Bach (my main horn is a stock 37) and because it is a large bore, can be quite fatiguing on a long set. Im not a screamer, so I cant comment on the upper register, but up to high C, it plays very even and fairly well in tune. One thing that amazes me are the valves. They are absolutely fantastic! I recently had them adjusted by Doctor Valve in La Grange and he was able to fix a problem that had been there from the beginning. One of the valves on the return stroke would bottom out and a metal to metal impact would take place. I dont use the horn much, but take it on a lot of gigs as a back upjust in case. I think you will enjoy your purchase. It may not be an every day horn, but it sure is fun to play from time to time. Let us know how you like it.

Thanks, Tom! I'll keep you posted. My main horn is a Bach 37, too. (Steve Winans does great work, doesn't he?)

Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7357205021&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I thought I'd cured my vintage horn itch but it keeps cropping up.

Hi,

A friend of mine owned an Al Hirt Special from the early 70's. He told me that the bore was so big that he was sure that even after playing it for five years his air had not reached some parts of the horn
I played it a few times and while the sound was different, think spaghetti western theme music, it was a very nice instrument, well made with a good valve block. Sounds like you're going to have fun pulling out some Conrad Gozzo recordings!

Cheers,

Brian

Yeah, that was one of them. There was another that went for about 380 that I was interested in but i fell asleep on the action as it didn't end until about almost 2am my time. Oh well...snooze...you lose. Maybe next time.

Thanks, Alex. Hey, I like your blog. I'm hoping to help a friend of mine get one started. He's just your age. Eight months ago he fell off a roof and is paralyzed from the neck down. He's hoping to get a computer he can operate with his eyes. Life as we know it can change in an instant.

That's rather unfortunate to hear about your friend and you're right...things can change. It's amazing how sometimes we take things for granted. Some time ago, I read somewhere that they are now making chips that can be implanted in the brain where they can control computer by thought. Not sure how available the technology is but it might be something to look at for him. I'll be sure to say a prayer for him. Also, thank you for the blog compliment. I'm hoping to update the clips on it. Just been real busy as of late. Thanks.

I have a Leblanc Gozzo model trumpet. Gold plated, eloborate engraving,
absolutely mint condition.... and it is without a doubt one of the very best
trumpets (for me) that I've ever played!!

My eBay Paris LeBlanc arrived today, and it's a terrific horn! Smooth scale, easy upper register, excellent valve action, only minor cosmetic blemishes.

Plays brighter than my Bach 37, which makes it a great candidate for the big band I play in. Keep an eye out for one of these -- you won't be disappointed!

The older model LeBlanc Paris LB was called the "Symphonie ll". With a few minor changes it became the "AL Hirt Signature model" back when Big Al was very popular in the 1960's. The Al Hirt "Special" was actually a Holton ML product in the intermediate line. I've had several of each over the years and currently have a Signature model, the deluxe one with Al's signature in raised silver solder along the side of the bell. They do take a lot more air than a typical Bach 37 and they have that classic "french" sound. I enjoy playing it, but only for a relatively short period of time.Oddly enough, my Wild Thing is bigger but easier to play.

This one bears no model designation, no engraving except for ornate, narrow bands on the valve casing, caps, bottoms, and slide ferules. The badge is a very simple symbol with G. LeBlanc, Paris, in it.

It has an outlined "L" on the finger hook and, of course, the famous LeBlanc medallion on the third slide brace. The finish is lacquered yellow brass with nickle trim on the receiver and slides.

Not sure what year it is. The S/N is 8752. Any idea? Thanks!

I just checked the pictures. Yours is the Balanced model with the valves set closer to the bell. This was a popular style in France, as Courtois, Selmer and Evette Scaeffer also made them that way. The balanced Selmers are worth much more than the others because Louis Armstrong and Harry James played them.

I think you did great, and got it dirt cheap. Even if it isn't 'the' trumpet for you, you should have no problem getting your money back out of it.

Thanks for the good news! The horn really plays beautifully. It flies right up to G above high C with ease and it doesn't seem to take more air than my .460 horns. (Maybe I'll find out differently after a full gig!)

For what it is worth, my Leblanc Paris says Al Hirt Special on the mouthpiece receiver, but on the nickel-sized medallion (part of the slide brace) it says Al Hirt autograph model. It also has the signature on the bell.

Riding on an old thread here...do any of you know where the Leblanc Medallion ranks among these Leblanc models?

Does anyone know anything about the various Leblanc models? I picked up a used Medallion in great shape from a collector and would like to know where it stands in comparison to the other Leblanc models. One player said that they thought it was a "step-up" type model, whereas another said it was their top-of-the-line. It plays very well, but I have not playtested any other Leblancs to have any reference point.
