I'm looking for the cornet with the most mellow, flugelhorn-like tone, and superb intonation. Suggestions, please....

Eclipse copper bell.
If you are looking for a flugel-like tone, why not go for a flugel?
(Eclipse copper, of course ) |

Try a Wick mouthpiece on just about any cornet made, and see if that doesn't do the trick.
The darkest sounding cornet for the longest time for me was a plain jane '65 Fullerton Ambassador.
Today it is my copper bell Connie short model.
While I haven't played one, I always have my eye open for a Conn 12-A with the coprion bell. |

By far, the most mellow, flugel-sounding cornet I've ever played is the Besson Prestige. It's also maybe the best playing cornet I've ever tried. I tend to agree with trumpetmike, if you want the sound of a flugel, why not just play one? _________________ Olde Towne Brass

The Flip Oakes short cornet: http://www.flipoakes.com/bflat_short_cornet.htm
with the Warbuton BC very deep, semi-funnel, “British Cornet” cup mouthpiece. http://www.warburton-usa.com/

I was using the deep V mouthpiece from Flip Oakes, but the Warbuton BC gives a significantly more mellow sound to this sweet little cornet, at least for me. Hopefully Tom will look in and fill you in on the details. I let a trumpet player try this cornet with a Sparx 3B mouthpiece, and to him that sounded like a fluglehorn. |

For the economy minded, try the Getzen Eterna, with a proper cornet mpc. If your budget is even more limited, the Getzen Capri is wonderful.

DO NOT over look the new Xeno. It makes the Yamaha 'Maestro' 6335HS sound AND feel like a paperweight. _________________ Trumpet:

Norm - I play a Stomvi Master Titanium model cornet. It is the darkest horn I have ever tried (and I have tried a boat full of horns). Nothing even comes remotely close. I'd say it is between a very dark cornet and a flugel especially when using a Wick 4 or 4BW mpc. I use a Sparx #4 most of the time and am still on the very very deep side of the spectrum.
The really nice thing about playing a horn that is really dark to begin with is that you can use a shallower mpc and not have to give up range and articulation like you have to when playin a brighter horn with a deeper mpc.
Ya might want to contact Cambrass who are the U.S. Stomvi distributors. I have purchased 3 horns from them and they have treated me great. 1st class folks. Ask for Jose Mecking (sales manager). They sent me out horns on a one week approvel period at no charge. A real class act !!!

Good Luck

Disclaimer : I do not work for Stomvi or their distributors. I am not a sales rep or dealer for them. I just happen to like their horns _________________ "He has Van Gogh's ear for music."
