Hi everyone. I just recieved my "Warm-Ups and Studies" book the other day. I have a few days until my next lesson, but I wanted to get started right away. Is this book a routine or is an open-and-close type of book where you play the exercises you need to (like Arban, or Vizzuti, for example)? If it's the former, I'll just wait for my teacher to start me but if it's the latter, where do you recommend I start? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Wait for your instructor. The Stamp method is not a casual hit or miss system. Roy Poper puts out a book to go with the Stamp book (Roy Poper's Giude to the Brasswind Methods of James Stamp). You should pick that one up even though you have a teacher that knows the Stamp method. Roy's book is very helpful in helping players understand what Jimmie's intentions were with his method. If you don't know what Jimmie means to teach, the exercises can seem simplistic and pointless rather than effective and dynamic.

Its a great system, glad to hear you're going with it.

I'd say read all the text at the beginning of the book and hang in there until you get with your teacher. With Stamp, how you do the exercises is of paramount importance, so let someone demonstrate a bit before diving in.

Thanks. The reason I ask is that we're expecting snow around the time of my next lesson so I wanted to be able to start even if the lesson was cancelled. But I'll take your advice and wait either way. Thanks agian.

You may also want to check out Craig Morris's web site LivMusic.com
He has written three articles on using the Stamp warm-up/routine.
