How long should I stay on each excercise in the DTR. I know people have said it takes 6 years to finish the book but I was wondering how long to stay on each excercise. Thanks |

I can't recall about that but I can say that Claude always had me do SA (Systematic Approach) for one month per lesson.
Might have been just because I took one lesson a month I never questioned why, seemed logical -- one month per SA lesson.

Hey dudes. Daily Routines is just a huge book of pedal tone exercises like in Sytematic Approach- Part One is the pedal tone routine.
No one ever did the whole book that I know.
There are some good exercises in there that can help you in jazz playing while doing pedals like the augmented ones.
All a pedal tone exercise is is the first five notes followed by the exercise.
I think of the first five notes like kind of a mini flow study. All it is chromatic C-B-Bb-B-C. Blow straight through C to Bb.
This works great until you start on low G, which sends you down to pedal F. This is where the pedal register really begins.
Pivoting is cool but don't shift your setting ever. The tongue can guide you "through" registers. Claude meant dont use the lips. Instead "use" your tongue. Your tongue can not replace your lips. Your lips are still your lips and you still need them to play the horn.

Pete Breciani is working his way all the way through the book right now (he was a Gordon student and now plays trumpet at the Mirage Hotel for the Danny Gans show).
Jeff Purdle went all the way through it.
I went all the way through (except Claude had me skip to the advanced arpeggio chord studies after completing the first part of the book). I'm on my way through again now - two months done, 6 - 8 years to go...
I think Carl Leach did most or all of the book.
All for now,
John Mohan
P.S. Someone tell those guys over on the "Pops" topic in the Fundementals forum to quit arguing and start practicing their trumpets! |

re: Pops. Yeah, they're really getting with it.
I wish you would have skipped using the word misguided.
Cause now it's on a guided descent course right into the loo.
Mario Andretti
Michael Schumacher
Jeff Gordon
Tom Cruise
All good drivers but....
BTW-- Pops helped me achieve my A. It wasn't slotting- thanks to his input it is now.
Nevertheless, if he was a driving instructor he wouldn't be in the same class.
