Here's something that has me stumped: I've been playing in several bands, including a large community jazz ensemble with way more players than it needs. (It's a college course and anybody who can pay the fee is in.)

As a result, we've had as many as 10 trumpet players show up to play five books. The director is pretty laid back about who plays what and when, leaving it up to the section. Any advice on how to approach the situation?

Appoint a lead player as a group, and let him/her make the rules. It would probably be a real mess if all ten players played on the gigs, no matter what the entrances would be a bit of a CF.

I had a chance tonight (after rehearsal at a local watering hole) to find out more about how things work in this group. Apparently, it's pretty well organized. Several weeks before the big concert, someone passes out a grid of some kind and people bid for the parts they want to play. This assures there'll only be one player per book for each number. It also provides a way for everyone to get to play something juicy. Not a bad system when you've got a surplus of players. I'm pretty impressed with the director for letting the section work things out (although I have a feeling he'd step in pretty quick if someone insisted on playing over their head.)
