I dig Roy's and I dig Freddie Hubbard's. I love his sound, particularly on Up Jumped Spring.

For depth and darkness I go for Roy's. For my personal role model I go with CT! (want to hear an amazing flugel sound, check out "Clark After Dark". Wow.

Best,

T

All of the above are great, but FOR ME, the sound of a flugel is epitomized by Clark Terry! I think that is the CT referred to by Trent.

FWIIW coming from lil ol' me.

Clark Terry first....

...another guy who has a startlingly beautiful flugel sound is Allen Vizzuti. He did "It's a Lonely Town" or somesuch ballad with our group and the sound just filled the room. From his relatively bright trumpet sound, the contrast was amazing.

My picks for "best Flugel Sound" are:

1.) Clark Terry
2.) Mike Metheny
3.) Art Farmer
4.) Woody Shaw
5.) Randy Brecker
6.) Tom Harrell
7.) Freddie Hubbard (when he's not "screamin' on it)

Chet Baker "sounded" like he was playing a Flugel sometimes on his "early recordings" even though he was playing trumpet...

I love Arturo's sound on flugel as he demonstrated on Colors of the Wind! so very dark and mellow.

Miles Davis.

I've been listening to Miles for decades but didn't even know that some of those recordings like, "Porgy and Bess" and "Milestones" were on Flugal...until a few years ago.

"Milestones" is a trumpet (sextet) album.

"Miles Ahead" is all flugelhorn.

"Porgy and Bess" is, I believe, mostly/all trumpet.

I don't recall what's up on "Quiet Nights" (not one of my favorite Miles albums, nor one of his), it wouldn't suprise me that he plays some flugel on that recording.

None of those already mentioned is the BEST! They are all great players with individual voices . . .

Arturo and Doc both play Kanstul ZKF1525 right now. Doc has played many and always had a beautiful sound. Arturo puts his name on other horns, but in the studio and on big events he is still using the Kanstul.

This information came from Kanstul so I assume it is correct.

There are a lot of people out there. I have to agree on all of the above as they all sound wonderful on flugel. There is a new guy that I have come across (new to me anyway) that has a great sound on trumpet & flugel. His name is Sean Jones. Recently received the lead chair with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Very wonderful sound all the way around. His newest cd is called Genesis. Very nice playing in all registers. You should check him out.

I'd like to put a vote in for Hargrove too: what a huge, round, silky sound he has on flugel.

I think Alex Sipiagin sounds really great on Flugelhorn too, of the people playing right now.

Tom Harrell in his prime sounded real nice on flugelhorn...with a more traditional french flugel sound. I like the way Woody Shaw sounded on Flugelhorn as well.

How important is it as a modern jazz trumpet player to play flugelhorn?

(I havn't seen Scott Wendholt or Swana play them live ever)
I've been wondering this a lot lately, I love hearing someone play flugel, but I don't really like playing it that much, maybe cause I havn't played one yet that I really dug
