Such comments don't surprise me. They disappoint me, but I'd be shocked if there weren't such comments. Ignorance pervades.
"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."
- H. L. Mencken, journalist
I think if you assume that 80% of people are morons at least some (if not much) of the time - you'll be have a realistic and possibly optimistic view of the public at large.
(of course, there are plenty of times when I'd have to count myself in that majority, sadly)
Lots of people also think that teachers are overpaid. "They only work 8 months of the year," they say - even some of my friends. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Sorry to have to be the one to break the difficult news but as of 10pm on Sunday the 17th, The Cleveland Orchestra is officially on strike. Please show your support for my colleagues in the trumpet section and our entire orchestra as we navigate this difficult time.

A strike is the last resort, especially in these tough times.
Good luck and best wishes to the members of the Cleveland Orchestra.

OMG! God bless those incredible musicians. They're worth many times over whatever they're paid. So sad... |

Very sad indeed. And unfortunately there are orchestras all over the country who don't get paid half what Cleveland does that are taking much larger cuts. _________________ Joe Petrocelli |

I understand and support the musicians, but I also understand the compromised economy that we live in. Good luck to all. We're going
to need it. Change? We are riding a very tough time. Take every gig. _________________ Roy Miller |

We went through the same thing here in Bergen several years ago and it was a very painful process. A strike is tough on everybody involved. Hang in there and best of luck. Musicians all around the world are supporting you!
Best wishes from Bergen, Norway!

Does anyone know what the current pay scale is for the Cleveland Orchestra?
In these situations, the position of management is generally that there is not enough revenue to support the Orchestra beyond what is being offered. That could be a problem with fund raising and ticket sales but it could also be a problem with inefficient operation (too many managerial/staff employees and/or too much revenue allocated to management, unproductive promotional costs, etc.). Is the problem a revenue shortfall, inefficient operation or both?
With enough increase in revenue, there is no problem. Where does extra revenue come from? Who raises it? How is it raised?
We all sympathize with the musicians, but sympathizing with the musicians does not solve the problems. What are the solutions? _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Um having good management for starters....
Maybe don't bad mouth the players in the press and make them look like they don't work hard and are overpaid.
Just a thought, sounds crazy I know.
In other words having management not run by a jackass. |

Let's hope everyone involved focuses on what is right rather than who is right. Good luck. _________________ Bill Siegfried
