how should we approach the mouthpiece drills if we cant play below a low F# ? i cant play it with any decency on the horn or the piece...

If you are having difficulty buzzing or playing in that part of the horn, the cause is usually related to an embouchure problem. The mp drills are a great way to address these issues. I had similar problems. I always remember Boyde saying to move "as little as possible" as I was trying to correct it. This helped a great deal, and I am now very successful playing all over the horn. Also, the mp allows you to focus on what your air is really doing, as the horn can make it harder to identify.
