Hallo to everybody! We met this chat surfing on the web and we decided to write you. We are a group of italian trumpeters, all friends, pro and semi-pro. Do you know the great and amazing italian trumpet player ANDREA TOFANELLI? He is our idol and we follow him when he performs in live concerts and in the italian tv shows. Believe us, he's really incredible... Check him at http://www.trumpet.stuff website and let us know! If possible, listen also to his "Mattia's Walk" cd... We have listened to him live and we can say that nobody here in Italy and Europe can play high and loud like him!!! And he is a very pleasant person and an excellent teacher too...

EuroBrass,

If trumpet players were like the "Seven Wonders of the World" Andrea is yours. Canada has Maynard and we have Wynton. Maurice-- France.

Just recently Andrea responded to a question here in regards to a Debate Forum (see Definition: Double high range).
Unbeknownst to him, I share the same view on the subject matter.

I sent the obligatory "thank you" and mentioned how I was 1/2 italian and that I listened to his playing. You would assume that would be the end, right?

He replied and thanked ME for being so very kind! And said my next letter to him should be in italian since I'm half-italian. A pleasant person indeed. And willing to share and visit with people who have the common bond of being trumpet players.

As Charly put it, he's World Class.

Grazie. mm

P.S. I speak four or five languages but sadly no italian. (canadian, australian, british, new zealandish...)

For someone "willing to share and visit with people who have the common bond of being trumpet players" is for sure "World Class." This classification is not for those who don't even want to talk to you nor can they hold a civil conversation without their head getting in the way.

Hallo to everybody from Italy! We are back again...
We agree with mr Liad Bar-EL and we can affirm that Tofanelli isn't put on airs and doesn't show air of superiority. You must know him... Some of us took private lessons from him and attended his seminars. He's a very kind and understanding person, and at the same time is very professional and exacting about the trumpet section work. He's respectful to all colleagues and often spent a lot of compliments about them too. Believe us: that's rare and incredible in the italian trumpet players environment! He's the best here, from all points of view and we love him. We all think that he must move to USA for being definitively appreciated in all the world... But when we tell him that, he replies that he really loves and dreams America, but he feels to be not good enough for coming there... This is Andrea Tofanelli, one in a million...

Maybe he would be willing to come to the Middle East to put on a benefit concert for terror victims?

Mr. Eurobrass

Mr. Bar-El lives right in the middle of the carbomb/suicide bomb hell over there and is subjected to its terror on a daily basis. He's always trying to find ways to use his music to better the lives of the people around him.

I have had a copy of Mattia's Walk for a couple years now and thoroughly enjoy it. I would jump at the chance to see Andrea play in person.

I want to tell you something very personal so you know where I am coming from and you will realize that we are friends.

My family on my mother's side is from Italy. I was born in America. The family in Italy was near Rome and now is in Reggio Di Calabria near the Messina Straits. My grandfather, who died young and whom I never met, was a trumpet player. I use to speak fluent Italian when I was very young. Lastly, I am planning to take my mother back to Italy this next spring to visit distant relatives and to learn and buy some music.

I have been in touch with the Jewish synagogue in Rome to learn their particular style of music. I feel the Italian style of musical expression and want to put that forth in my music as well; so, I am very interested in the person whom you love.

Anything you can tell me about his style would be most appreciated.

All the best and hope that we can be friends,

Dear Liad,
so you have italian origins... this is really a "coup de theatre" (in italian: colpo di scena)!
From Jerusalem to Italy we have met into an american trumpeter's chatline!
About Tofanelli, he's a very powerful trumpeter, he lives in Italy and works as lead trumpet and soloist. Believe us, he's amazing... He performed with Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band too, here in Italy.
We think that perhaps it's better for you to contact mr Andrea Tofanelli directly, so you can ask him all what you want. He surely will be glad to know you and to give you all the musical informations that you need.
His e-mail address is: andtofa@tin.it

We send to you a great embrace from Italy!

We pray all the members to come back here if possible. But only if the subject is considered interesting, obviously...
Greetings to everybody!

I have sent Andrea Tofanelli an e-mail and I am waiting for a reply.

Whoever has heard Andrea Tofanelli, would you mind commenting on his style and how it might be different from other styles in America for instance?

All the best,

Liad

HI Liad,

I've owned his "Mattia's Walk" now for a couple years. He has a very bright tone, very "liquid" in nature. PLays effortlessly in the upper registers. Almost shrill at times for my tastes. The music has a distinctly Latin feel to it. There are a couple slow numbers when he climbs back down from the ultra-altissimo register and plays sweetly.

I can't listen to it too much because it has almost an edge to it that makes me a little nervous. If there was any American player I would equate him to it would be Phil Driscoll.

Please do not misconstrue my words to be critical of Andrea. He is a heckuva player. I'd just prefer a little less high work from him because his mid range stuff is great too.

Just my 2 cents

Here's the letter I received from Andrea Tofanelli and he gave me his permission to publish it here in this forum.

Dear Liad,
nice to meet you. I know very well mr Emanuele Di Porto, who works in
the Jewish synagogue in Rome and is the private secretary of mr Elio
Toaff, the ex Chief Rabbi of Jewish community in Rome. Mr Di Porto was a
french horn player and we worked together several times years ago, but
at the moment it's a long time that i don't see him. I don't know if he
is actually the private secretary of mr Rav Riccardo Di Segni, the new
Chief Rabbi in Rome. Anyway, he is a very nice person and a man of great
culture.
I think that it's very difficult to live in the Middle East area, right?
I hope that things could be better in the future. But this is a very
difficult historic period, made of general insecurity and big changes...
Sometimes i wonder what could we do for being useful as musicians.
Playing? Playing also for beneficence? Playing the music inspired by
these world changes? Perhaps it's not enough...
Well, i try to answer to your question. I was born 37 years ago and i
grew up listening to american big bands music and great trumpet players,
especially Maynard, Dizzy, Satchmo, Miles, Maurice André, Harry James,
but i was also listening to the great italian opera music. In fact, i
was born and live actually in Torre del Lago Puccini, a village where
the well-known opera composer Giacomo Puccini wrote his beautiful
melodies. This influenced me very much. So, if you talk about trumpet
playing american style, i think that i am a little different. I really
love american style but as a matter of fact i feel nearer to the latin
style about the taste of playing melody (but not completely...). Latin
music and opera music are different, obviously, but perhaps one thing is
common in both of them: they pay the same attention to the melody.
Think that i must work here in Italy playing several and different
styles and genres of music, so i try to be good in all them...and i
don't know if i succeed to do it well!
I am a little disappointed about the sound of my trumpet in my first cd,
"Mattia's Walk & Tribute To Maynard Ferguson" because the sound engineer
made it too...penetrating. I had only a few days available for recording
and mixing it, so that has been the result.
My following cd, "Ricordo di Napoli" has a beautiful sound of trumpet. I
like it, perhaps because the sound engineer was different and more
expert, and i remembered the mistake of the first recording.
So, for ending, i think to be between latin and american styles about
trumpet playing... perhaps it is an "italian" style...do you agree?
Let me know what do you think, and thank you for your contact.
All the best
Andrea Tofanelli
