Our 7-member Dixieland band has been asked to play an outdoor concert at a senior residence. We'd be in the parking lot, seated six fee or more apart.
Residents would listen from their balconies.
My wife is freaked, noting that most of us are playing wind instruments and thinks we'll putting one another at risk.
I think she's been listening to too much CNN but maybe she's right.
What do you think? _________________ Jim Hatfield

Incredibly irresponsible behavior on the part of the management at this Seniors Home. _________________ www.mikesailors.com |

Jim,
just imagine that a few days latter you are told that there is Covid cases in this place...Would you sleep well?
If you want to help, do nothing!
Stay home and wait the end of the nightmare.

Thank you for understanding - whichever way the wind blows (from the residence to your band, or from your band to the residence), the potential for transmission is there. You can send them a link to your band's Youtube video in the meantime. |

Thanks, everyone!
I sent this message to the client this morning:
Thanks for the invitation but owing to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the U.S. and the growing call for social distancing we will not be performing anywhere for the next few months.
We hope we can play for your residents when the coronavirus crisis has been resolved.
Be safe,

My parents are in a retirement home and their place did some kind of a parking lot performance for those staying inside. I think they're theoretically possible to do safely (one or two players with their own amplification, traveling independently and going back home, etc.).
That said, I think you 100% made the right call. I do think a central challenge of this is how to relate/care for those in isolation. |

You made the right call, Jim.
That said, I have taken my horn up to the town park and done my normal daily tunes portion of playing solo while people are walking. I stay at least 50 feet from the path and people respect my distance as well. Lots of folks thank me for playing. Nobody's asked me to move along. |

Thanks! Someone earlier in this thread questioned the judgment of the senior facility’s management for extending the invitation. In their defense, the date they had in mind was April 27, still some weeks away.
Also, I’m willing to cut them some slack because I know the activity director and she works very hard to brighten residents’ lives which can be empty even in good times.
The Covid-19 crisis has placed an extra heavy burden on senior communities. A friend of mine has a sister living in a very nice one nearby and she says residents are restricted to their rooms. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Greetings from... The Nurse.
This virus is not just droplet - it's clearly airborne. I read a study where the air was tested both in the rooms of covid patients and in the hallway outside of those rooms (which were not negative pressure rooms). SARS-CoV2 RNA was detected both in the patients' rooms and in the hallway outside the rooms. SARS-CoV2 is the name of the novel coronavirus that causes the CoVid-19 disease.
Six feet doesn't really cut it.
Stay safe.
I have a job interview for a critical care position tomorrow at 2 PM. Talk about diving into the deep end...
Best wishes,
