hey, im looking for a nice flugelhorn, but i have no clue what to look for. every now and then i look on ebay for one under like 500 and i see a lot of student models whos brand name i do not recognize. Does anyone have a nice smooth sounding flugel that are willing to sell, or could someone give me some makers who have a good reputation for quality and a low price?
any suggestions would be immensely helpful. thanks |

I play a student model Yamaha that I got for around 400, very nice beginner flugel. My son played it for a year in band and had no problems with it. It has a brighter tone than some flugels and getting the right deep cup mouthpiece is important if you are going for 'that' sound. In it's own voicing, it is a lot of fun.
Many here have posted about the Jupiter flugel and what a good value for the money it is. |

You asked about Blessing....I have the 4 valver in silver plated. Quality, finish is good. I couldn't find a better 'new' flugel for the money when I was looking. Blessing uses a CNC one piece valve casing with the industry standard Monel pistons. Most folks opt for the 3 valve with a trigger and the copper bell. That is the horn I would have settled for but I wanted the larger bell and the 4th valve. Sound is mellower or tubbier than a brighter Yahama and Jupiter. Getzen, Courtois, Blessing and Kanstul make a 4 valve flugel.
I went with Blessing. My son has a top of the line Blessing trumpet and it seems fine also. But my 1915 Blessing is my main trumpet. I guess I just like Blessings. _________________ David Hass

When you do decide to get a flugel, no matter how much you want to spend on it, be SURE to get a third valve trigger on it. It is essential!
As far as brand, Jupiters are great "bang for the buck" horns, but are more than $500. Laquered with a trigger is about $820 on Dillon Music. The Blessing Scholastic model is the closest to $500 on Dillon, though it has horizontal tubes, making it more like a trumpet than a flugel. _________________ -Vintage King Super 20 Bb Trumpet

I own a Blessing Artist model flugel in brass (I think it's a student model), and it's a nice horn. I bought it off of eBay a few years ago, and it plays really well. I haven't played any other brands, but I am looking into it. Just my $0.02. _________________ To the praise of His glory!

Red Rodney played one (Blessing 154R). He could have played anything he wanted. The 154R is a larger .460 bore. Here's a video clip of Rodney playing the Blessing.

does the horizontal tubing affect the sound of the horn, or is it just cosmetic? |

I'd second the Cerveny deal mentioned above. I bought one from WWBW at that price about 8 months ago. It's a terrific horn, especially for the money. Only downside is the lack of a 3rd valve trigger but I have found it to be pretty well in tune across the board. Supplied mouthpiece was also quite good and I was able to play up to and above top C easily and in tune although flugels sound best in the mid and lower register generally speaking.
good luck

I would hang out and keep an eye out for a Yammie 631 or 731 for $500-$600, and in the meantime keep socking away cash. Either of those horns will be a fantastic starting point, and will last as long as you find your sound lines up with theirs. _________________ RJM

Not really essential in my opinion, never use mine and it just gets in the way. Save your money. _________________ "What's the point of playing if you can't improvise?"

Depending on the brand it is very important. It's also not a terribly exspensive option. I know a guy who has a blessing C trumpet and claims that it play as good or better than any bach. Jupiter is also a very good brand. If its not a thing you have to have right now then don't get one yet. Start saving up money and maybe you'll find a nice couesnon. _________________ Do or do not, there is no try.

Yamaha
Silver plated blessing
Getzen Eterna
and of coarse the above mentioned Jupiter.

Regarding a trigger on the third valve slide...

I agree, it is not essential. I had one on my Blessing 154RT and have one now on my Kanstul French Besson Brevete and only use it to make sure it still functions. I didn't have one on my Couesnon or Buescher's and never needed it. I learned where the pitch was centered and learned to play the horn. The many pro's who play Couesnon's don't play with triggers. |

I tried once an horizontal tubing flug.-can't remember the brand, I believe a French brand, so I won't say anything regarding the sound.
But on another matter... Did not liked the way you have to handle it. I thought it was uncomfortable. |

Agreed, the YTR 631 and 731 are excellent values! |

I play an 1972 Olds copper bell. I love its dark, smokey sound. I've been looking for a new flugel because the valves are bad on my Olds. I tried a Jupiter 846RL for a couple of weeks. It is a great horn. Extremely resonant, free blowing horn with fairly tight slots. I liked the 3rd valve trigger, but not the way they are set up. (just my opinion) I would have bought this horn, but I'm hooked on the darker sound on my Olds, so I'll be packing it of to Anderson's for a valve job at the end of July. My Olds has no 3rd slide trigger, and I've gotten used to that over the years. It's easy to push the pitch on a flugel. But when I get it back I'm gonna install a reversed 3rd slide trigger so it will go down when I push out on the mechanism. (instead of pulling in)
Play a Jupiter if you get the chance. They are a really nice horn. _________________ Music is a fire in your belly, fighting to get out. You'd better put a horn in the way before someone gets hurt. |
