Has anyone played with, or knew Bobby Bryant. (A great L.A. player
of the 60's)

This is from the liner notes of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra CD called "Live at MCG". They are describing how the band is like "family".

When our former lead trumpet player, the late Bobby Bryant, suffered a stroke, Jeff Clayton designed and built a trumpet stand so that Bobby could still play with the band even though he was unable to hold his horn.

I remember 2 LPs that were issued under Bobby Bryant's name. Perhaps there were more, but these are the 2 that I know of. If I remember correctly, they were issued in the late 60's or early 70's. The first one was music from "Hair", given the big band treatment. It was very commercial, but I really liked that record. The second LP of his was called "Swahili (sp?) Strut", (again, if I remember correctly). This was also with a large band, but it was nowhere near as commercial as "Hair". As I recall, Bryant played wonderfully on those records, with a big brassy tone and lots of high notes and technique. I would imagine that neither album sold enough copies to justify reissusing them on CD, but I for one, would enjoy hearing them again (I no longer own the records, having long ago converted to CDs).

The session "Ain't Doing Too B-a-D Bad" was released on CD by the Japanese three or four years ago. It's a bit pricey, but can be bought thru AMAZON. I'm hoping they release more stuff from the CADET lable.

It's good to hear him mentioned on the TH!!

On Swahili Strut he had Cat Anderson sitting in with him.
I think Cat played most of the super high stuff.
Some nice arrangements on that album.

Anyone hear him on some of the Thelonious Monk big band stuff? That's a great band.

One of my favorites was the recording with Oliver Nelison's big band Live from LA. Check out Down By The Riverside. This is one crazy ass chart and hard as hell to play. The trumpet section here get's a little mixed up but press on to play the crap out of it. Bobby Bryant displays some crazy chops here.

Also here. Listen to the bridge on Night Train. When you can do what he's doing on this chart you too can call yourself a lead player.

Incidentally, he worked frequently with Nat "King" Cole. He's heavily featured on Cole's album "Love." No doubt thousands of wedding band trumpeters have transcribed his solo on that tune without even knowing who it was. What a monster player with a deep fried sound.

There's not much info about Bobby Bryant or his equipment on the net.
But as far as I can tell, he is shown with a Benge trumpet on several CD-covers and once with a Getzen Eterna flugelhorn.

Anyway, great musician and great music

Not familiar with him per se, but I do recognize his name from the old Jet-Tone Mouthpiece brochures I used to have. Pics of the brochures are on the web, no idea which model he used though. He’s right below Clark Terry.

It is a great solo based on the melody with some tasty ad libs thrown in, and its one the public knows. It's often one of the very first solos I have middle school students learn.
