The type of lip shape should not generally be a limitation or problem, just one of many factors to consider. Doc's types do not specifically address that because it doesn't determine what type might be best for you - your type is determined by what actually works on your face. You should get with someone who understands the types, and go from there.
Why do you feel like it's a limitation for you? Is that an area with no muscle mass for support? I can imagine various possibilities, but I would need more information to actually give advice. |

Realize that the Reinhardt approach to such things is completely based on what embouchure type you are. There is little point in the type of discussions that I see in the rest of this site, without the perspective of knowing which type you're working with. Muscle strength means little without proper form for the individual. It's all about how you play, not what you play. If you're interested in fixing whatever problems you may have, this is a good place to learn the other way of looking at things. |

If we can see some pictures of your face, playing at least 3 octaves of C, we can see what you're doing. Can you post them somewhere and provide a link? It doesn't look like this forum has a place to post pictures, but maybe it does and I don't know about it. |

Is a "widow's peak" the same as a "cupid's bow"? I thought a widow's peak was the term for a V-shaped receding hairline ... really!

Cupids Bow is the fleshy, sometimes protruding V shape on the top lip. I think its what you are talking about. I have it Mine is about the size of a New York Sirloin |

A teacher, of whom i respect, gave me the advice that the cupid's bow might mean i have to play off to the side to fully progress. However, before i do something as radical as that i wanted to make sure i know ALL of my options and then i can make a good, clear cut decision that will be to my advantage.
Jerry, i don't know whoes is bigger, mine or yours (that sounds a bit strange haha) all i know is that mines big enough to make me feel like it is interfering with progress.
I'm keen to hear what people with similar 'gifts' (haha) have done to over come its limitations, if indeed they managed to do so. So share your stories, and your triumphs (hopefully).

I play off to the side. I may be wrong but I saw a video of Pops freebuzzing. He has a Cupids bow too and he plays a little off center. For me the issue isn't the off center playing, its that the bow is very sensitive to colds and some fancy meds I take once in a while and it swells and gets puffy |

It looks to me like you're probably a IV, but without hearing you and doing some tests, Iwouldn't want to guess too much. I do think you're not using enough mouthpiece pressure. Either that or you were playing extremely soft when you took those pictures. "No pressure" doesn't work, period, whatever type you are or should be.
How about more pictures, at a decent volume? What happens for you above high C? |
