I was at the Brass Bow today and had a chance to play the Wayne Tanabe-designed Phaeton Bb trumpet.
Very nice horn! Extremely responsive. Very open. Nice balance, Great sound - not too bright or too dark.
The model I played is a .460 bore in lacquered gold brass. The horn will also be available in silver, brushed satin gold, and -- get this -- black nickel!
The most distinctive thing about the horn's look is the bracing fore and aft. Not round like most braces but flat, with a profile a little like crescent moons.
Pricing is undetermined at this point but expected to be in the $1,600 range.

So Wayne designed it......I don't suppose Kanstul is making it? |

I'm not sure who's making the horn. Wayne was at the Midwest Band Director's Convention, so I didn't have a chance to talk with him personally. I'm sure he would be pleased to answer questions about the horn, and I would expect there'll be some publicity about it out soon. I just think it's really exciting to have a new horn (besides the Zeus, of course) on the scene.

I was at the Brass Bow last December and saw the prototype for this horn. The valve cluster is made by Kanstul but the salesman who played it for us said Tanabe makes the bells. The bell on this model was made like the old Conn Vocabell trumpets. It did not have a wire bead to the bell flair. |

Hey, I just suggested "Kanstul" as a joke! (It seems they make a significant portion of just about everybody else's horn). Honest...I was kidding.
Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year....and be safe out there! |

I just played one of these horns yesterday at Rayburn's in Boston. Amazing horn. There's something I love about it that I can't quite put my finger on. It also looks pretty darn cool (this was the black version). Anyone else played one? _________________ 2003 All-State Musician |

Does anyone know if the Phaeton is really the "Chicago Brassworks" horn with a different label on it? I'd find it strange that Wayne has come out with TWO new horns at virtually the same time. |

It too played one at Rayburn in Boston a few months back. It's not a bad horn. Certainly pro quality. But not my favorite.
As far as who builds it...not sure, but I believe that the guys at MBG used to be affiliated with LA Sax. Do we know who builds their horns?

Hey all:
I played this horn in prototype version as well when I was at the Brass Bow getting some work done and checking out MP's. I played the brushed raw brass, and lacquered brass horns in December of 02, and the Black nickle in 2/03. They are cool horns with a nice sound and blow. I would put them in the pro quality line, but totally different from the Chicago Brass Works horn that Wayne is also coming out with. You would be best to speak with Wayne for the details, but I spoke with him about both horns and they're like night and day. One is meant to be a boutique horn like the Lawler, WT, Blackburn, etc. and the other is priced to be competitive with Yamaha, Bach, Getzen, Conn, etc. etc. etc.
That is when the whole thing started for me looking for a new horn. I wished that I had never tried those damn things! : ) They started a long hunt for a new axe, and it was really fun! |
