Hey Guys,
I need some recommendations on the best cup mute for playing old Ellington transcriptions. I have a stonlined and I just can't deal with the ridiculous amount of resistance it has. What do you guys recommend.
Thanks,
Chad |

Might try a Denis Wick Precision Mute, which can be adjusted for mike, solo, and section work. Or try the Tom Crown copper. Great sound, relatively little interference with intonation.
Best,

Jim's right! Go with the Wick adjustable or the Tom Crown copper. The stone-lined
does have a great, unique sound, and probably the most historically correct sound
for Ellington transcriptions, but it is a fight! Well worth it though if you can get it under
control.

I've been using a Shastock adjustable cup mute for decades now. It also converts to a straight mute and can even be used as a wah-wah mute. I just bought one for my valve trombone too. I don't think you can buy them new anymore but a new looking one was recently posted on ebay. It may still be there. _________________ John Haysom

The Shastock was the mute of choice for players of that era (and also for those great cup-muted solos by the boppers like Fats, Diz, & early Miles). The stone-lined is a close second. Many of the others that have been mentioned are more "user-friendly" but do not have the authentic sound.
Stick with your Stone-lined unless you can find a Shastock or afford a Charlie Davis. |

Tom Crown makes a smaller cup mute for eflat cornet that fits My pocket trumpet perfectly.
I love the dark sound of the stone-lined.
I once saw Doc warming up on a stone-lined.

Pat,
In the last part of your post you said that I should stick with my stonelined unless I can afford a Charles Davis. I'm sure I can afford one and in the latest Brasswind catalog they have them in copper for $60 and alluminum for $54. Are they the way to go?? I'm looking for that authentic sound, but I have to play a lead piece with it and I can't play with the backpressure of the stonelined. How do they play compared to the Tom Crown? I played one of those and it was much easier to play than the stonelined.
Thanks,
Chad |

For jazz you do not want a metal cup mute. The sound isn't right. If you get the Davis get the fiber one. It is like the Stone-lined except that the intonation and the resistance is better.
I got mine from ProWinds.

I called pro winds and they don't have a Charles Davis fibre cup mute in stock. Neither does dillon music. Do you know where I can pick one up? The alluminum one looks like it has something other than alluminum in the construction of the cup, it's black.
Thanks,
Chad |

I honestly don't know. Mine was just in their regular stock @ Prowinds & contains no metal. I'll try to get over there this week and look at what they have in stock. |

Thanks Pat, I called them and they only had the alluminum one. Do you know if that would suffice?
Thanks,

All of Charly's mutes are great. I know it will be good. It might not be as authentic a sound as the fiber ones, but I doubt that you'll be disappointed. |
