I just recently had the opportunity to hear recordings by Matthias Hofs in both solo recordings and in the larger brass ensemble "German Brass". What an incredible musician. Brilliant sound when called for...subdued and mellow when prescribed. Wonderful technique but all in the name of the music rather than for itself.

One thing I was especially empressed about was the clarity, style and sensitivity of his trills. I haven't heard anyone with this quality to this degree since Maurice Andre.

How has this player gotten by me for so long? (I have no idea.)

His playing is absolutely amazing! But just wait until you watch him play. It is soooo effortless, it's incredible. Get the German Brass Goes Bach DVD. His picc playing is flat out the best you will hear.

Audio + Video = The whole picture.

When our idols make it sound easy, that's because, for them, it is...

Yes, he has gotten by under the radar here in the states, but he is one of my very favorite trumpet players. Simply amazing.

I saw German Brass play at University of Georgia in 2001 (Fred Mills was a big part of bringing them to the states for the first time). It was the best brass playing I've ever seen, bar none. Summit Brass is about as close as we have here in the US, but as terrific as they are (and they have my utmost respect), German Brass is simply in a league of their own. They played a 3+ hour concert with one intermission, and least 3 encores...no hint of fatigue in any of them.

The German Brass Goes Bach DVD is terrific, but still no comparison to seeing it live and up close. All I can say is

*choke*

Umm... mine was around $20. Maybe it is out of production.

If you subscribe to Netflix (highly recommended!), you can get it there.

This was what I thought when I heard Gunther Beetz for the first time. And yes, Hofs is great!

Soon there will be a new recording with Matthias Hofs and the Hamburg Philharmonic Soloists.

The recording took place last September. Some pictures are available:

I recently began my "love affair" with this group, and I found a few clips at YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKf6Go3sqO0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js_KEUJh7sU

Absolutely amazing playing at that level in front of thousands of people.

I also scoured the web for recordings (also found the $100+ options at Amazon) until I went to the German Brass website (http://www.german-brass.de/german_brass/home/indexe.php). They sell every recording from their site, and they cost about 20 Euro. The problem is the shipping cost to the US is 25 Euro I believe. That means buying 2 recordings would be over $100...something I'm not quite ready (or able) to do, sadly.

The good news is that I hear they will be at the ITG conference at Amherst this year (just confirmed this at ITG website), and I will make every effort to be there for the sole purpose of seeing these guys. And after looking at the line up for the entire conference...dang, looks amazing!

The recordings are outstanding! The video is outstanding!! BUT...you
absolutely cannot fully appreciate what he does (the ensemble also) unless
you see them live. They are scheduled to be at the ITG conference at
UMass this June. Seeing this group alone is worth the trip. I saw them in
Georgia also and you know you've seen/heard something special when
greats like Mills, Romm, Sasaki, Dean, Perantoni, Rhythm & Brass, and
many more players we revere, are on their feet at the end of the program
yelling and appaluding along with the rest of us.

Even better is something few people would ever have the opportunity of
doing. My quintet was scheduled to play at 3:00. Right before us on stage
was German Brass. My group was backstage listening and we got the full
up-close-and-personal sonic effect of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in d
minor". You just can't beat hearing something like that from 10 feet away.

The DVD, "German Brass Bach for Brass" is available at the German Brass
website...German Brass Shop...for about $30.00 (23,00EUR). The DVD at
Amazon for $111.97 is out of print and frankly, looks like a pirated version
of the one at the GB website. The description of the DVD itself sounds
identical to "Bach for Brass" (very sedate concert setting in a church,
which BTW, is nothing at all like their auditorium shows).

Paul -- Amen to your post, bro! I was working a vendor booth at UGA when they came, and everyone in-the-know was buzzing about it the entire week leading up to the performance. I had originally planned to break down my booth and go home, but Fred was insistent that I stay. His words were, "this is the best brass group on the planet, period. You'll be very sorry if you miss this." That was enough for me!

Have you all heard the Gansch Meets Hofs CD? If you haven't, you might want to check it out. I particularly like the Concertino by Peter Lawrence. I got mine at http://www.schagerl.at but don't recall how much it cost.

Excellent CD - some stunning playing on it.

My one adult student turned up to his last lesson of 2006 with a copy of this Concertino (he knows Peter Lawrence) and wanted a play through it - it sounds MUCH easier than it is

(or could it be that Gansch & Hofs are just rather good? )

Newell Sheridan (Sheridan Brass) was selling these at ITG last June for
$20.00. He's a Thein distributor (Hofs' weapon of choice) and may still have
some. You can reach him through his website.. www.sheridanbrass.com
There aren't ANY CD's shown at his website but you never know what he
may have laying around looking for a home.

BTW - If you ever get the chance to try the Thein Bb/A/G Picc...OMG!!

For those of you in the U.S.A., you can purchase Matthias Hofs' three cds, and an assortment of German Brass recordings off of the Canadian Brass website at $18 a piece!

http://www.canadianbrassstore.com/artists-gb.html

I hope this is of help to some of you.
