It dawned on me that the same LA guys are talked about every 5 seconds around here. While they (mentioned below) are all fabulous players, I'm sure Southern California has more than a big band section that functions as a set of orchestra guys half the time.
But seriously, the heavy hitters seem to be:
Wayne Bergeron
Rick Baptist
Malcolm McNab
Jon Lewis
I'm not all that up-to-date on who's who out there, so if anyone knows any of the other guys who do the studio work we hear all the time, please mention them. I'm sure they're well worth talking about, and actually, I'd like to hear more of them. Anyone? _________________ Vince K. |

No, No! No apologies! Thank you for responding with a well-drawn list, and also thank you to TheSoundisintheMind and AverageJoe! Picking out some guys that I know and would like to randomly spark some topic about...
I heard George Graham underwent some type of surgery and hasn't been playing (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong). If that's true, how's he doing these days? I love that guy's playing to death, and would be majorly bummed if he put the horn down.
I haven't heard too much from Walt Johnson in the last few years. What're some of the latest things he's played on? I need some new stuff to listen to.
Boyd Hood does studio work? I didn't know he played much outside the LA Phil, but then again, I'm not from the area.
pardon me if this is a stupid question, but is Frank Szabo by any chance related to Rich Szabo? Isn't not the most common last name, and since both guys are basically in the same game, I figured I'd ask. We have the Findley brothers, after all.
Anyone else care to toss some stuff in? _________________ Vince K. |

I believe Don Green used to do a fair amount of studio work as well. |

Wildcat -
I believe that Walt Johnson still travels as Frank Sinatra Jr.'s lead player. Wonderful trumpet player!

Roy Poper is now retired from the scene, but over the past 30 years he did a ton of studio work. Check out rick james' street song album. |

Walt travels with several big acts, the LA Phil guys all do stuff, Frank is no relation to Rich.

Both Boyde and Don have done a fair amount of studio work over the years. I think the studio scene has gotten quite a bit tighter lately, as there isn't nearly as much to go around. Couple that with the Philharmonic's schedule and policy regarding playing hooky to take a studio call...
We're more likely to play jingles, which don't require the same time commitment as laying down a movie soundtrack. That being said, both Don and I played a session last week for Spiderman 3. Bill Churchville and Warren Luening were also on that session.
