I have just finished two LONG days totalling 20 hours of filming, scanning, photographing, et al. in the Rafael Mendez Library. A well known Los Angeles director/producer, Ken Shapiro, and his crew were hired by the Los Angeles Opera to film the opera performances of "Concierto para Mendez" last October. They wanted to add several minutes of photos and early Mendez footage to the final 60 minute documentary. For two days, the RML looked like the launch center for the spaceshuttle!
This will be an absolute First Class video, one which every trumpet player should see or own. It will likely be aired first on PBS. If all goes well in the final production schedule, and PBS can work it into their TV broadcast schedule, it will be aired next November or December.
UniVision is interested in producing a version with Spanish subtitles. This version will also be available on DVD, hopefully within the next year or so.
I will keep everyone informed as to when it will be broadcast and when DVD copies will be available for purchase.

Please can you ensure that any potential DVD release is multi-region - there is a worldwide market for things that are Mendez-related |

I, too, will look forward to the release of this video/DVD, Dr. Hickman.
I've been going through my collection of Mendez music I've collected over the past 60 years and see I have several old editions from the 1940's & early '50's, when he recorded on the Coast and early Decca labels, 78's of course.

Hi Dave:
I don't know if I ever got to tell you that I have been a Menez "freak" for the past 50 years. I loved his playing in high scchool, went to see him a few times live, went to his clinics, and one of my prized posessions is an album that he signed for me. I have some LP's of him, some 78's, and of course the whole CD set that Summit put out.
I definitely want to be one of the first to order the new DVD as soon as it comes out. And - I WILL make an appointment to visit you and see the Mendez library this summer, when we are at our "Arizona home."

Mike,
Great. Let's spend a few hours in the library this summer. Just let me know when you can be here.

Malcomb McNab called me a few days ago to see if I knew anything new about the release of the final video on DVD or on PBS. Neither of us have heard a word from the LA Opera that produced it. I don't know what the hang-up is. Trust me, when it is available I will spread the word big-time. I have seen the final video and it is wonderful. Very inspiring and emotional!

Nothing further on this......???
Perhaps, in $uch time$.....a list of committed buyers might inspire some action.....
I'm in for at least two.... (A.N.A., one's for you.... -- Of course, that is assuming the cost is, at least just inside, the realm of affordability.... |

Thank you Professor Hickman for giving us the "heads-up" on this broadcast. I grew up in the 40's and 50's thinking then, (as I still do), that MENDEZ stood heads and shoulders above all of the rest.
I am looking forward to seeing this documentary. _________________ Bill Anderson

I'm getting married on Oct. 17 in Tempe. The Mendez brothers and their wives will be attending. I will ask if they know any updates on the TV broadcast or DVD.
