Philippe Gaubert's Cantabile et Scherzetto is such a lovely piece. I was just playing through it and wondering exactly when it was composed. Maybe Prof. Hickman or some other scholar could tell us the year this was written.

I agree completely! This is one of the most beautiful and elegant works for cornet and piano. That is why I published my edition of it.

In my program notes, I write about Gaubert and his importance as a flutist, composer, and conductor. However, I was unable to find the date of this composition. Maybe someone knows?

Wow, a very quick reply! I realize I neglected to plug your edition, Prof. Hickman. Everyone, buy this piece from Hickman Editions!

Was there a copyright date on the original publication, or did you go to a manuscript source for this?

I do not have a copy of the original hand manuscript. The early (out of print editions) I worked from had no copyright date on them.

Cool! But I'm interested to know how you know this. What's your source?

I highly recommend Cantabile and Scherzetto as a festival or recital piece. I played it in high school and have enjoyed playing it since! The cantabile section is beautiful and is a great exercise in the art of phrasing. The scherzetto movement is a great exercise in triple tonguing and is fun to play at the same time.

I googled it and found a dissertation on Gaubert's flute and piano music. At the end is a complete list of Gaubert's works arranged by genre and date of publication. "Cantabile et Scherzetto" is listed as 1909.

here is an updated link to the Thesis.

Also, in case that link does work, the title of the thesis is:
