Does anyone know what mouthpiece William Adam himself used?

Last time I went out to see Mr. Adam, he was playing on a 3C. I'm going out again next month, so I'll be sure to take note.

I believe that Michael is correct in saying that Adam now plays on a 3C. In the '80s & '90s I think that he mostly played a 1C.

Mr. Adam told me that in the 1940s when he was working in Hollywood that he had Carroll Purviance custom design mouthpieces for him. These were eventually the models for the pieces that Bob Reeves currently sells as the Purviance 9 and 9A (formerly 5*K & 5*K4 I think).

When I saw Mr. Adam last month, I asked him about that Purviance mouthpiece. He said when he was playing in LA, he took a Joseph Gustat mouthpiece to Carroll Purviance to copy. That is what the 9A is based on, according to him. Gustat was principal with the St. Louis Symphony many years ago, and a fine teacher. Miles Davis and Clark Terry were just 2 of his students.

5star3, 4star3. Those both had the same rim (43 64ths). 5star3 was deeper and had a 25 throat, the 4star3 shallower and 27 throat.

5starK4 and 4starK4 were smaller (42 64ths rim) and I believe made for a member of the SanFrancisco Symphony whose last name starts with a K. Sorry, too many years ago. Kress?

The 9A is the 5star3, the 9 is the 4star3.

I had sets of both, wish I still had them. Dom Spera was big on the 5star3. Fat sound all over the horn.

Interesting discussion here. I normally play a Bach 3C mouthpiece, but when I want more "zing" in a big band type setting, I'll switch to my Purviance 4*K4. It's relatively easy to go back and forth between these two mouthpieces.

Mr. Adam played on a 3C last time I saw him as well, but he used a 5C for his picc and C trumpet if I remember correctly. He said there was no particular reason for this, just that that one specific mpc made the right sound with those specific two that he owned.

Pushyred,

Mr. Adam ALWAYS spoke in reverent tones when he reccomended that we all get to know Mr. Vacchiano's recordings with the NY Phil. He is one of the best models for a great trumpet sound, style, and phrasing.

Thanks PH very cool.

I guess it just goes to show that as trumpet players, we are all more alike than we are different. Regardless of your tastes in music or what kind of gig you wind up playing, a good sound is a good sound is a good sound.

Hey Jam_Man-

Are you an Adam student? With whom do you study?

For good Mr. Adam and Mr. Adam-related sites, check out the Bill Adam Tribute Site. You'd also enjoy http://www.selmer.com/trumpet/discus/index.html
This is a Bach discussion site moderated by DOCTOR Karl Sievers, one of the greatest Adam students out there. PH also chimes in with some great insight and his awesome sense of humor.

I am not a student of Bill Adam, but I do take lessons from a guy that is a student of his and I use Adam's method, technique, and practice routines. I have heard some good things about that discussion forum. I have a recording of Karl Sievers on a Trilogy Big Band CD. Trilogy is out of KC. He is a really fine player.

Mr. Harbison-

Can we please delete most of this thread?

Mr. Adam used to play a Bach 1C and now he plays a 3C. He uses a 5C for pic and C trumpet.

The end.
