I was practicing this afternoon and remembered that pedal tones can help your range etc. I started playing all pedals for like 10 mins, going down to double pedal c and back. I then decided to hit high. I hit a clear high F, not a squeak, but a solid, fat sounding note. It was easier to hit the higher notes, too. It was great.

Bonjour, M'sieu Welk -

When you say "pedal F#", do you mean the first F# below the staff? Or one octave lower?

I have some excellent pedal tone exercises. If these might be of interest to you I will be happy to mail you a set. In which case, send me your mailing address at dolms80825@aol.com.

Au revoir, mon ami.

Welk,
I would say, the first f# below the staff isn't a pedol note. All notes below that are pedal tones. Those somehow don't bring the horn to responding good anymore. That is why they sound ugly. I think most people's pedal tones sound really bad at first. The most important thing is to make them sound good and open and in tune. Then they'll be a great help to your playing. It is imortant to keep your lips tense, even though you might think that you gotta loosen up your embouchure, but it is really important to keep your embouchure the same on all notes.
Hope this helps
PB

Just to add to "Quadrup's" suggestions, I would also make certain that you're using plenty of air...steady stream of air. Not to be confused with playing louder or harder (well I'm sure you already know that..sorry!). Over time, it will help produce the notes broadly with good intonation!

Pedals help if practiced correctly and with the right concept in mind.
