Hmmm... It's possible the oxidation is so bad it is fixed "hard" to the mpc. I would try using regular polish on just the end of the mpc (shank, that goes into the trumpet) so it gets better contact with the foil. You should not need to wrap it, just a good contact at that end should do it.
General note: This chemical reaction will restore silver by reducing the oxidation, but it does not actually clean your silver! IOW, it does not eliminate/replace your normal cleaning procedures. Thanks for the info - this particular mouthpiece was one that I got out of an e-bay Olds Ambassador, so I can tell you it is definitely NOT representative of my regular cleaning habits. The amount of this hard black tarnish is amazing, and though the volume has nothing to do with the sort of tarnish I want to remove, the type does. I tend to beat up silver and lacquer rather quickly, so even when I wipe everything down/bathe everything regularly, I still managed to develop some black in the usual places. _________________ RJM

Can you use this for just regular cleaning as well? And I presume you take the valves out BEFORE you drop the horn in? And it HAS to be silver, right? _________________ I dodge the warm fuzzies, are they contagious?

No this is only to clean the tarnish off of the silver plating. The baking soda and foil won't shake loose the valve oil scum and whatnot. For that use warm water and a bit of dish soap.
Yes do take the valves out. You wouldn't want to ruin the felts, and corks etc. Plus the valves aren't silver.....they're nickel...so the baking soda wouldn't work on it.
*Edit* Yes it does have to be silver.
Hope this helps. _________________ Philippians 1:6 |
